I’ve been at my company for 5 years. Recently was looked over for a promotion where I had just as much if not more experience than the person who got it, and more seniority by 2 years. I can’t help but think it’s because my supervisor simply likes him more, because I’ve seen them hugging before. Another person in my department got promoted, even though she has been written up several times in the past and landed in HR for creating a hostile work environment by screaming at supervisors and treating coworkers like shit. But our director loves her. I work hard. I have never been disciplined. I volunteer for projects and train others. I don’t complain. But I am always overlooked. Today, we had a company meeting and at the end of it, they had a slideshow recognizing people who had their anniversaries with the company. I just had…

Toxic Work Evironment
Here is an excerpt from a stupid-long job posting full of BS, but the only “relevant” part is this crap from the very end: “Required skills and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in graphic design, art, or related field preferred. Exceptional creativity and innovative design skills Motion Graphic experience preferred but not required. Excellent communication and presentation skills Organizational and time-management skills for meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment Pay depends upon experience.” Let's break this down… Required skills and Qualifications – “Required” already implies a sense of employer entitlement. Remember – “Beggars can't be choosers”. This is some type of creative job. Maybe they know or have heard of the “starving artist” trope, and are seeking to exploit someone they perceive to be like this. The heading says required”, but later they use the softer word “preferred”. Using the hard language first shows they're probably inflexible and heavy handed…
Employer gave me a second job, zero pay
So I’m in a bit of a pickle. I’ve worked for this company (for sake of ease, I’ll refer to it as X) since March of this year. I was hired part-time as a retail worker, but my manager resigned pretty soon into my tenure and I was offered her role by the CFO. All of this was rather jarring since I had only planned to work at X part-time while I looked for full-time positions in my field. As manager, I was given a salary, benefits, and a measly amount of PTO time. For background, the family that owns X also owns another company that I’ll refer to as Y. X and Y sell the same products to the same consumer base with Y using X–the larger, more lucrative company with a brick-and-mortar location and warehouse–as its distributor, however the connection between the two is meant to be kept…
Broken system…
Went to college for four years, got an associates and a bachelors. Now in my masters program. Got two certificates for the job field I want to work in. Worked in retail the past 6 years to have job experience. And now I am not getting hired anywhere because I can’t even get an interview anywhere in my field for a minimum wage entry job :/ this sucks
Update to wage theft report in PA
Original post here https://old.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/14s7dcl/we_are_short_staffed_so_you_cant_quit_update_i/ The Labor Law investigator called and said I had no claim. He emailed me this: 1. You cannot reject an employers required meal period as that would be insubordination on your part with the companies policy, #2. PA does not require employers to pay employees for a meal period that last longer than 20 minutes, and you are not performing work. #3. (FLSA) Fair Labor Standards act, does not require meal or rest / break periods, however except for employees between the age of 14 and 17 and for seasonal farm workers. There was NO BREAK given. That's the issue. Number 2 doesn't apply because I never had any breaks, and number 3 is the only one that would apply. So basically, everyone in PA (and probably other states) can work continuously until they pass out with no breaks. He ignored the wage theft entirely. I…
“Dream” Jobs
If society were to collapse tomorrow, what would you do with yourself? I would raise bees and plant trees like my life depended on it.
Does this video contain good advice?
What do people generally think of the recommendations in this “How to Survive Your Office Job” video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp3Lfy5Wdek&ab_channel=RenegadeCut I agree in principle with what is being said, but I am wondering if the actual advice is useful or if workers will shoot themselves in the foot by following it. I was asked for a summary: Some of these are obviously good advice, but some may get people in trouble. Video by Renegade Cut. In it, he discusses things such as: How to handle things when your boss demands you take on new tasks (point out that this will require overtime for more pay, dropping other tasks, or a drop in quality. For example, if you are told there is a “development opportunity” which is an added project you should demand more pay or that other projects be dropped. If your boss blames somebody above them, say you need to speak…
Serious but dumb question please. I work in tech as a 'SME', and have been doing this type of work for years. Got reprimanded today for being unavailable at a certain point in the day (I wanted focus time – I can provide more context if desired). Reprimanded by a s*** manager that doesn't know heads from tails. Led to a long string of people further reprimanding me and talking to me like I was a 5 year old. Found myself being anxious for a second then just.. not.. caring.. and thinking 'damn, I'm too old for this..' .. Then just being mad. Anyone else feel like their done with being managed? How do you deal with the feeling day in day out? Cause I recognize in the working world we don't always have or make the choice not to. Also recognize I'm too old (40+) to be asking this…
