Quiet quitting — a rant

As this was (and still is) my first full-time, “real world” job, I honestly tried to give my best. I was the stereotypical employee who believed the propaganda that was being fed to us by managers and the big boys in the big positions, who thought that hard work and proving myself capable of joggling responsibilities and taking on to-dos that aren't really in my job description, then my effort would be recognized. Last year I was this close to getting the promotion I've been working towards and have been promised for about two years at that point. But then I was told some mumbo jumbo about how said promotion was not possible anymore and that I would be getting it at the beginning of 2023. I hung my head and accepted. Fast forward to 2023 and while being praised about my performance last year, I ask, again, about that…

I have a feeling that well-off people don’t work or they work very little

Is the general rule that rich people don’t work, and well-paid people work a lot less than is commonly thought? Do many, practically speaking, achieve freedom from work early in their careers? I feel like the amount of things in the world is actually somewhat small… There’s no way people in offices build things, figuratively speaking, and constantly improve themselves for eight hours a day. Is work for many actually about winning the favor of rich people and upholding the façade?

“Do you feel good leaving now?”

Um, yes? I did my time, did everything I am supposed to do during said time, despite a chasmic lack of help, and I clocked out ten minutes ago? Companies gotta stop with this whole asinine “more than just a job” brainwashing strategy. Asking me twenty questions on who’s here now, what help we have to do [x] task, and just making this face 🥴 as I list off the names and everything we just did to have the place in good shape. Can you leave me the fuck alone now? IT IS JUST A JOB. The toxicity and disrespect by management is insanely at an all-time high. I need working culture, civilization and humanity to fall apart now, please.

Financial Post claims worker power is unbalanced.

Worker rights have been crumbling for decades, and when we gain a small bit of happiness, the financial complains about “imbalance.” Marsha my dear, pass me the flamethrower. https://financialpost.com/fp-work/office-vacancy-rate-peak-2024-hybrid-work-popularity “With the imbalance in the employment market where the employees still have a lot of power … they’re making decisions to work from home longer, so that is impacting people’s desire to keep offices. So what we’re seeing on a regular basis is they may keep their space, but they’re reducing it by 10 per cent or 20 per cent.”

Ring, ring, it’s 7am

Ring, ring, it's 7:00 A.M. Move yourself to go again Cold water in the face Brings you back to this awful place Never mind that it's time for the bus We got to work and you're one of us Clocks go slow in a place of work Minutes drag and the hours jerk So get back to work and sweat some more The sun will sink and we'll get out the door It's no good for man to work in cages Hit the town, he drinks his wages You're frettin', you're sweatin' But did you notice, you ain't gettin' You're frettin', you're sweatin' But did you notice, not gettin' anywhere Song: Magnificent Seven (excerpts) by the Clash

Time to quit because I don’t have time off…

Hello I’m a 21F who has been working part time at a hotel since January and it’s time to quit! We had a manager who would cover for everyone or just didn’t have anyone work when someone needed time off – it sucked for her and I acknowledge that. But when you give someone MONTHS to find coverage, that’s your job! Especially with most people not having the same schedule each week. However, since all my coworkers go to church together, no one works Sundays even when scheduled. I know this well because I was in training but no one would show up and it was just me basically sitting there as I had never worked a hotel before. Why am I quitting? Well we have a new assistant general manager and she is making sure everyone has time to even request off. I understand call outs are crazy but…

Losing a $1.56 raise

I work for a pretty large company. 10k employees. 7k of them are unionized, including me. I recently applied for a few different positions at the same company. I got an offer. I currently make $24.41. The offer was for $25.97. So I accepted it and tunnel visioned on it, canceling another interview, and even canceling vacation i had planned for my sons first day of kindergarten. Bc that just happened to be the first day of training for my new job. Then 4 days into my new job I ask HR why my pay hasn't been updated. They call me in confusion. They claim now my pay should never have changed and that the offer was a typo on their part. My first offer was meant for a new hire. Which is insane they get paid so much more but beside the point. My second offer, in which I…

I got ghosted for another interview. Again

Why is this such a common practice? They contacted me to set up an interview, I set up said interview. And they don’t even show up? They don’t even contact me back when I call and text them? If I did this shit before an interview it’d be an entire issue. I set aside my time on my one day off to do this and I get ghosted. I’ve been at my current job for a year. I’m a baker at an old folk’s home. I hate my job because I’m treated poorly, and am expected to take the fall for every mistake I don’t even make. I’m overworked and making barely enough to survive. I’m not in management, and yet I’m expected to make sure our servers do their job when it’s not in my job description . I’m expected to pick up the slack of other job positions…

Lets talk about skill inflation

Every year you have to pay more money to afford the same. The same applies for skill. Borrowed an old Master Thesis of a professor from the 80s. He had just 15 books as literature and it was just 60 written pages long. Some pages were only half or one quarter full. Today this would barely pass as a Bachelor Thesis. During his entire Masters he had only some 30 exams – today the same Masters has 60 and probably also twice the knowledge and learning load. This applies not only to accademia but the job market as well. They want you to speak several languages where 20 years ago one sufficed. They want you to know several Programms and applications where 30 years ago one was enough. The work load is probably 2-3x greater than 20 years ago – they expect you to be rechable 24/7 and work during…
