I used to think I was awful at my profession. But now I’m in a new job and realized that I just did not have good leaders to help me thrive.

I used to work in corporate and now I’m in the public sector and unionized and wow the difference is insane in the best way. I work in marketing and I had so many micromanagers who didn’t understand best practices, would totally re-write my content and just tell me it wasn’t “exciting” enough or whatever bs and I would study what they did but it was never enough and I realized they were a “their way or the highway” person and there was no winning. So I felt really beat down and insecure. Feeling like I chose the wrong profession. But now …. This week there was a big project at my new job. And the leaders were so supportive. Instead of re-writing, they provided multiple rounds of feedback and said “try thinking about it this way…” and I actually LEARNED by DOING. I’m not bad at what I do.…

Why has the 9-5 day become 8-5:30 with a 30 min unpaid lunch?

I thought there was a consensus of companies issuing a new 4 day work week but alot of what I'm seeing is now 8-5:30…. So a 45 hour work week at the same rate of pay? Do a lot of you do this?

Is it just me or has COVID ruined sick days?

I work in long-term care, have throughout the pandemic. I’ve been in multiple facilities over the years and this seems to be an issue across the board so I was wondering if any other industries are pulling this as well. Though you’re encouraged to “tough it out” and show up anyway, OFFICIALLY if you have any cold/flu/covid symptoms you are supposed to immediately stay home from work pending a negative COVID test. When you get the negative you may return to work. I’ve found that for myself & coworkers, whenever we’re sick with absolutely anything that’s not COVID, we are expected to be at work. There’s very much an attitude of “oh your test came back negative, it’s not COVID, you need to come in.” And when you try telling them that no, it’s not COVID but you definitely are sick, coughing, vomiting, in the bathroom constantly etc, you get…

Just withdrew my application because of Glassdoor reviews

The hiring manager at the company reached out to me about a role that I’m a great fit for. I had an interview scheduled for today and in the meantime I did my research on the company. Surface level, the company looked great, my kind of vibes and interests. I got the warm fuzzies from just browsing the site, I was excited. Then I turn to Glassdoor, just to see what others have said. That’s where the ick started. 90% of the reviews from current and previous employees were negative, 1-2 stars, with paragraphs written about how terrible the company is. Work/life balance is nonexistent, higher ups don’t listen to employees, very much a ”girl boss” kind of culture, lots of turnover and layoffs. I would’ve taken this with a grain of salt, but the most recent reviews (and there were many) were from a few months ago. After exploring…

Is it worth getting fired for severance pay?

Im working FT for company A, and found a slightly higher paying job with company B, also FT. I'm going to work both for a while (they're both hybrid so I can get away with it). Do I give my 2 weeks notice to comp. A or continue doing bare minimum (or way less) so I can collect the paycheck until they eventually fire me (also get a severance package)? Both jobs are in the same industry, but I dont plan to ever work in this industry again. How? I will be going back to uni next year to take something else entirely, and I'm trying to save up money till then for tution fees and a used car. Sounds bad, but inflation is skyhigh, rent, bills, tution, etc. are insane and these employers treat each of us as expendable and lowly slaves. Is it a bad idea to milk…

How do I ask my boss for a better computer so I can do my job properly.

Here's a work related struggle for ya, does anyone else have this problem…. I am a graphic designer. At our shop we do mostly signs and decals. But sometimes we do large prints which have a large file sizes. The programs they have installed on my computer are Corel x3 (2013) and SignLab (2019). Old programs but still kind of work. When I do graphic heavy work or even simple graphic work my computer becomes really slow and sometimes freezes. It's even hard to navigate between programs, folders and email. Here are some of the specs….Windows 10 Pro version 21H1 installed on 8/10/2021, Installed Ram – 4.00 GB (3.86 GB usable), System Type – 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. I have a good relationship with my boss. But this is becoming to much. How do I ask my for a better computer without sounding frustrated jerk. Also, what kind of…

Just started job and already wanna quit

I(18f) just started working at an ice cream shop, it pays below minimum wage, 7 bucks an hour but they legally CAN do that because we get tips (if we are lucky) but we have to split the tips among everyone. The work is so. Fucking. Grueling. I know it seems stupid since it’s ice cream but my coworkers are assholes, and making the ice cream combos and side work it’s just not worth it especially considering the amount of money I’m making. I’m miserable. My bf keeps telling me to just “stick it out till I find a new job” but just thinking about working another few weeks makes me want to sob. I just started working 3 weeks ago and this place sucks. Idk what to do any advice?

Forcefully Promoted to Interim Assistant Program Director. Help???

So, I (M, 25) work for a non-profit that has recently undergone many staff changes. By staff changes, I mean we have multiple people quitting per week. I was hired 5 months ago as a temporary case manager. Within that time frame, The Assistant Director, Interim Assistant Director, and Team Lead that became Interim Assistant Director quit. Out of all the people left, I am the “most experienced”. Just had a meeting with COO, and the 4 people left on this team including myself have to take on additional duties that the AD used to have. Having less experience than even myself, everyone is looking to me for support. No one else knows how the program operates, and the higher-ups don't really care or are too busy to help with our program. I have limited experience, but making the best of it! The higher-ups get annoyed when I ask questions…

Why are higher ups so moronic on running an efficient business?

We've had a few people quit because they were taking on additional duties without a raise. Now the remaining people are “being given an opportunity to expand their skillset” by taking on, you guesses it, more work from the people who quit. Like seriously, just pay workers more. It's taken me a year to learn how to do this job and if I quit- a real possibility in a year- the business will have to find someone willing to work for a few bucks above minimum wage in my city.
