Month: August 2023
Every time a higher-up speaks at work they sound like they're talking to a kindergarten class. I HATE being talked down to, it's been one of my absolute biggest pet peeves since I was a child. Either talk to me like a person or don't talk to me at all ugh We had a training at work the other day and I really felt like I was transported into a Dora episode where all the color had been drained from the world and it's cold and everything is moving in slow motion but everyone is acting like this is normal and fine? That last part was most likely sensory issues and anxiety/adhd but the main thing that stuck with me was the tone everyone had towards myself and the other employees, like we're an actual kindergarten class, á la “what do you think we're going to talk about next? That's…
My take on unions
Throughout my working life, I have worn many hats to put it mildly. I have experience from being in a union, supervising a location that had a union and being on the outside looking in at my wife working for a union. I have to say, and this may be based on my geographic area, I don’t believe unions are all that great (adios to my karma). Before you go off downvoting, let me explain. In my 20s I worked for a very long time at a union job. It seemed great. The way things were setup, the pay and benefits were good, everyone seemed to get a fair shake at job bids (based on seniority), people that were brought into the office got representation dealing with management that they would have otherwise not had. Honestly, they seemed very beneficial. I started to notice that certain core members of the…
As the title suggests, this system is something completely new entirely. Žižek, an actual Marxist, pretty much recently said in some talk that he has no gripes with allying with “small, creative capitalist” at this stage to fight this mess of a neo-feudal garbage heap. America has anti-trust laws, yet are not being enforced. Where are the tanks in front of Amazon forcing them to break up? It's ridiculous.
My boss told me today that I need to be at my house during the week when we're slow so I can be dragged out to visit work sites on the whim. My partner lives 2 hours away and I have been here working from home. Is this even legal?
One of the common themes on the employer screwed me over posts are people that don't have copies of their employer's (often former employer's) HR policies, nor have they ever read them. Read and understand them before they affect you. Then save electronic copies of the policies. Also make sure to save back-up copies to Google drive or other cloud storage. These policies might be called an employee handbook. They might be an intranet site. It might be paper book in the break room. It might be called a P&P (policy and procedure) document. If you don't get a copy that you can keep, take legible photos and save the images. Some key topics to focus upon are: Termination and related programs such as severance Attendance, tardiness, job abandonment, Overtime Time off from work such as Vacation, PTO, Sick days, holidays. Leave of Absences and related laws like FMLA Disciplinary…
I work for a contractor, to remain generally inconspicuous, the company is called “Brallied Booniversal”. The specific site I work at is a government area, federal laws apply here. We are also in a union. All of us were told (not promised)last year 2022, that we might get a raise since we had to change the contract. I’m not sure what exactly was changed, but for about 4 months we were all under the impression we’d get it. Nothing was on paper, at least not for us. November comes up, the day the contract is expected to change, and we’re told we didn’t get the raise. We’re all upset with the news, but we carry on. In March this year, we as a union put in formal written requests to change the contract for a numerous amount of things; wages and better insurance etc. This time we were told and…
I'm at the train station, getting ready to get on the train to go to work, when I find an empty tap card. I decide to load it up using my work commuter subsidy card with a couple rides to leave as a lucky find for some lucky person. I finish doing that, and I spy this trio of lost looking guys, and as I apporach them to give it to them, one of them asks if I can help them find the transit card store. They're trying to get Blind passes. They're blind. Well, two of them are blind, one can see okayish. Two don't speak english, they're immigrant refugees from Iraq. And the one who sees is not the one who can speak english. So I obviously have to help them. I decide that because I know exactly where the place is (it is the temporary one, the…
Hi all, I recently got a great offer for a new position after having left an extremely toxic work environment and job searching for months. It seems wonderful, much closer to the kind of work i want to do and much better compensation and benefits. Company culture seems good too and there’s very low turnover. I start in 2 weeks. My problem now, however, is that my supervisor just emailed me a bunch of work and instructed me to go ahead and get started since they’re very busy. I’m not getting paid or anything until my start date and i’m not sure what to do. I really need this job, but I don’t want to give the impression right away that I can he taken advantage of. What should I do??
