How are you supposed to make ends meet?!

Okay so as to not be homeless in the next 8-9 months.. Place I work now said part time is 28 hours a week, my average a week is 8 hours, two days a week highest has been 18 but that's cuz I was able to take someone's shift which isn't a common thing. The second place I juat did a interview with says their hours will be 4-12 a week… I didn't get to ask if that's Just for training and if they go up after that or not and it's something to ask in another interview but what the fuck man??? Full disclosure, trying to move into a condo that I'll get in inheritance, so I know I'm very lucky but I have to show for 6 months that on my own I can make up rent. It sucks my folks won't let my soon to be husband…

Hours worked and on call

I won’t go too deep into detail, I have a position with decent pay. I normally work 8-12 hours a day. It varies depending on the job(s) for that day. What amazes me is there is on call during the night. Not every night, but it’s about 90 nights a year. At one point do you say I’m done? You work 8-12 hours and get a call. You leave your house and perform the work. Which means it could 2 hours to 8 more hours with an average of 4-6 hours added on to your 12 hour day. And it’s not just when you get off for the day.. it could be as soon as you clock out to 6 hours later. It’s affecting my nerves, sleep schedule and home life. And the pay, the on call itself pay is really bad. Say you don’t get called in. You’ve thought…

Unless you’re contractually obligated, you don’t have to give notice if you don’t want to.

I left a job and offered two weeks. They said, no worries, today can be your last day. Translation, they didn't want to pay me for another two weeks, and felt that outweighed any contribution I might give over those two weeks. Three weeks later a work friend of mine said he was leaving the same company and didn't give them any notice, and they were really upset about it. According to him they said, “You know, it's professional to give two weeks.” He still declined. The point is, it's not about professionalism, it's all business and bottom line. If they think the business would financially benefit from paying you additional salary and having you around for additional time, that's what they go with and suddenly require. If they think paying you additional salary will have no impactful benefit, then they go with that and let you go immediately. Remember…

What to do when asked to rat out staff?

I'm a manager in a mid-sized company with about 10 other managers. The CEO sent us all a weird email asking if we knew if anyone was violating anything in our company policy manual. By anything, I'm sure the focus is likely on employees failing to return to the office 4 days a week, but it might also be employees who are going home during lunch, putting up political posters in cubes, or posting firm policy stuff on Glassdoor. All stuff I don't really have an issue with. I know I have a few employees who occasionally break RTO policy or have a beer at lunch. But what to do? Say nothing Say “I'm not aware of any policy breakers.” (this is what 2 other managers did) Say “I'm aware, but they are minor violations like taking 10 extra mins for lunch.” I mean, this is absurd. He didn't provide…
