I started a new job recently and was told upon starting that the company is reviewing their work from home policy and we'll be required to go in three days a week. All through my interview process, I was told I would be required to go in once a week (though regrettably don't have anything stating this in my contract), and there was no mention of the company reviewing their work from home policy. Quite frankly, I wouldn't have accepted the job if I had known I'd be required to go in three days a week since I was previously working fully remote at a job I mostly enjoyed. The work seems interesting and the people seem great, so I would love to make it work, but I think three days a week is going to be really draining with the commute and all, and I feel a bit bitter…

Giving up on this crappy job
Hey everyone. I’m going to keep this short and sweet. I’m in 1st line IT. We have a north and south branch in the UK. I’m North. Each branch have different clients. My colleagues in the south have walked because the job is shit and now we in the north have to take their calls to raise their tickets for them then to get around to doing after a very long period of time. The callers call us back up demanding to know what their tickets will be looked at and I say the same thing everyday now. “Sorry, you’re through to North, our colleagues in the south are too busy to get through literally hundreds of tickets in a day, I don’t have an ETA, but I can add a note to your ticket because that’s all I can do as I don’t have access to your database or…
I work for a large automotive company. I am the only female at my location. I have been in this industry for many years. First as a service writer then an automotive technician and now I am in sales. We have a customer who is known for being unpleasant. Every single time I’ve felt with him, the call has ended with him cursing and calling me names. This has progressively gotten worse. Yesterday was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I told him he was being very rude and put him on hold. Management was not happy that I stuck up for myself. I told them I couldn’t believe they were allowing this customer to treat me this way. They told me to try not to answer the phone when he calls. How the hell am I supposed to do that?! I am now nervous when the phone rings.…
Money and Motivation
I have always been someone who lives paycheque to paycheque like most people. Then something changed. It was awful. My dad died. I obviously would trade everything back in a heartbeat to have him here again. He had set aside a moderate amount of money for each of us- not a whack but enough to make a difference. When I first receives it I felt messed up and I resented it. I felt like my father's entire existence, everything he was to me was reduced to a cheque. As I work through my grief and find my footing again- here is one thing I noticed. Hopelessness made my motivation issues ten times worse. Not being able to pay your bills and struggling regardless makes everything feel hopeless. I'd call off, I'd get so in my head about things and then it was like “So I miss another day, I lose…
9-6 in tech and feel so lifeless
I've recently started a 3 months probation period in a startup (R&D), after graduating from university with an MS.c in STEM. The tech situation is awful here (Israel), and after sending my CV for more than 100 postings (there really aren't that many available tech jobs right now to even submit my CV to, especially for recent grads), and accepted the first offer that I received. The salary is about 60k dollars a year, working 9 hours a day for 5 days a week + more than 30 monthly overtime hours that if I'm asked to do I won't get paid for. The way I see it, there also isn't really an option to sometimes work from home unless there's a good justification for it (getting kids out of school or whatever). I must say that the salary isn't even that luxurious considering the crazy COL here. I'll get to…
I’m on strike right now
While sitting at home in my boxers drinking a beer. Too wet for the picket line. NIPSA/UNISON et al in Northern Ireland
Been working at a non US government agency for nearly 14 years, half of it being on this secondment thats just ended. 7 years ago a vacancy opened up in my current team due the person going on a round the world trip for 6 months. I jumped into the role which is much higher paying and made an impression on management. 6 months became 1 year, which became 2 years, and then became 5. At this point im carrying the team now on key projects, because the rest are deadwood but in permanent positions. We have a restructure during covid and they axe the position i was seconded in because the bean counters deemed that person wasn't needed as clearly the team as achieving so much without that role. They didn't count seconded staff backfilling it for some dumb reason. I got back to my old role for a…
Hi everyone, I work at a small family business. One of my colleagues is the son of the boss, and i have got some others who are part-time. Son of the boss does less than the bare minimum, doesn't follow protocol, and worst of all: doesn't do what he promises to do. So I end up getting regular extra work every single week. Part times all start on monday, but by the end of the week they disappear. Add on top of this the work that's done badly/not done at all by bosses son. I'm trying to leave but so far none of my interviews ended with me being hired. I'm tired, burned out, have zero motivation for most days… Please give me some survival tips! Thanks, and have a relaxing weekend you all 🙂
I've been with my current company for nearly two years now, and I generally find satisfaction in my role. Unfortunately, our organization has been grappling with a series of layoffs recently, which has left me apprehensive about the potential for more downsizing in the future. Although my team has managed to weather these challenges so far, I've taken the proactive step of preparing my resume. However, I'm uncertain about pursuing opportunities outside my current company that offer both a higher salary and a more prestigious job title. My primary concern is that these potential employers might reach out to my current employer for references, which could jeopardize my current position and get me fired prematurely. Is there any risk involved in applying for such positions, given these circumstances?
The sharp rise in Anger and Entitlement
I was told to job hop to make more money. It got me out of retail fast, and I've seen the state of the job market change. It's scary. It's never been this bad. MUST SPEAK ENGLISH. MUST OWN CAR. MUST LIVE LESS THAN 30 MINUTES AWAY. MUST BE ABLE TO HANDLE A FAST PACED ENVIRONMENT. MUST WORK OVERTIME WHEN NEEDED. (20$/hr and not a penny more don't bother.) There's more. This list is just the recurring examples. The other ones are crazier. Straight up berating potential employees for daring to apply. The car thing really bothers me because gas and vehicle prices are way up in my area. Poors don't apply seems to be one of the new rules for most offices. Three of my friends have left my region, hoping to find less expensive housing too. They are all educated professionals. It's grim. I've been to nine interviews…
