I teach swim lessons at a private pool. The first client they assigned me to was a boy that refused to do anything I asked of him. He left my 3rd lesson in tears. I can go into detail in comments if someone is curious, but in a nutshell, it looked bad. The mom contacted my manager the next day saying there is a disconnect between us and requested another swim teacher. Here is where I'm curious if my manager was being fair or not. She sent an email saying that my client did not like me as an instructor and was requesting a switch. In it, she said that the kid was crying during the whole lesson and that his mother knows he is “normally” not like that, asked what happened during our lessons, why I am taking so long to do swim lessons, asked another instructor if he…

i can’t seem to be bothered…
i'm 23 and started my first job little less than 2 years ago. the work is quite process based and doesn't require much creativity but this also increases the scope for human error. i have made mistakes in the past and learnt from them as i was not familiar with the environment or nature of systems, etc. i would say that i have a fairly good understanding of things and i know how to get most matters closed now. for a few months things have been slow at my firm, i have been doing the minimum daily required work and not bothered much despite there being other little issues to focus on here and there. there is a lot of procrastination and a general attitude of “yeah, this can be dealt with later, don't think anyone is bothered about this” the slacking off finally caught up to me when i…
Was visiting a friend today who has two new homes being built across the road and just saw the funniest thing. The original house was flattened and the lot split. Two different small business builders, different crews. One builder is apparently an arsehole, always swearing at his crew and regularly picking on the apprentice chippy (carpenter). The other crew are normally quietly getting on with the job and often joking around. Apparently about an hour before we arrived the arse had been swearing at his apprentice again about not doing something right and the kid had finally fired back about him not showing or explaining how it should be done. This resulted in a more abuse about just doing what he was told. We had been there chatting with our friend when things went right off. The boss had another go at the apprentice calling him useless dumb f..k at…
I hear it all the time that AI will replace us in the workforce but I am one of the few I know of that says “Good”. I think with AI replacing us in the workforce it will result in a positive cultural shift where we ACTUALLY have more free time to pursue hobbies and interests. I know there will be consequences, there are MANY to consider. What do you think will be the pros and cons and how to solve them ? For one, I know a UBI will very likely be necessary as there won't be enough occupations with spaces to fill otherwise the economy will grind to a halt.
Rant CW: hints of passive suicidal ideation 25M, graduated uni three years ago with ambitions in healthcare, maybe physical therapy. Fairly bright, was doing well. Then my own health went into the toilet. No diagnoses, an endless number of doctors can’t figure anything out, little help from meds or healthy lifestyle tips. Just a collection of symptoms in various body systems that make normal life impossible. (Doesn’t seem to be long COVID, and I haven’t knowingly gotten COVID yet.) Living with my parents, scraping by on odd online jobs. But with the consistent severity of daily symptoms, frequent flare-ups of chronic illness, and how often I get sick (10 total weeks of respiratory illness this year despite solid precautions, but thankfully no COVID at least according to PCR tests), work consistency is impossible. I could maybe squeeze 20-25h/wk out of myself with 12 weeks of sick leave per year. But…
PTO IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT
My company got bought out by a larger company earlier this year. Every single monthly staff meeting since, the VP has stated “Remember PTO is a privilege, not a right” I get 21 days PTO which is for vacation and sick time . Have you ever heard this statement before? What do you think? So far the culture here seems to realy be about controlling their employees which is very offputting.
Toxic attitudes in higher education
MBA Course – Discussion on organizational culture – one person starts on that no one has work ethic anymore and blames the millennials and complains that they don't want to stay late at work anymore. That we are all entitled. Then they started on how schools don't give their kids enough homework and how that is ruining them as future workers. I might have gotten a little worked up about the millennials comment. My response to his rant: I agree that there is a shift in the way employees perceive their roles and the amount of effort they put into their work. However, I disagree with the notion that it is primarily limited to millennials. Many millennials are almost 40 years old (known as elder millennials) and have been working for over two decades. As someone responsible for interviewing and hiring for my organization, I can say that I have…
Dodge a bullet
Earlier this year I was called by an old employer who was asking me if I was interested in coming back to them as a batch maker. I said no thanks I'm happy where I am, they said I was making $16 when I left them and a batcher makes 20 an hour. I still said no they offered to pay me 21.50. I just said I work for a rival company sitting on my ass making close to $30 an hour please stop calling. Almost 3 months after that call the plant was shut down I could of been jobless and those asshats knew and were gonna mess me up. 8 years ago they had 10 plants, now they down to 3 I give them maybe another 10 years before they close for good.
And to add insult to injury, that “27,000 taka” is less than $250 USD… per month. Asshole bosses are in every country.
