My mom just learned the hard way that loyalty to a employer gets you nowhere

My mom worked as a daycare teacher and made $10/hour and usually worked 11 hour days. She insisted that the pay was really great and that she had such a wonderful boss. Well a few months ago she broke her foot at work and had to take 3 months off. She found out recently that they had been complaining about her behind her back saying that it must be nice to get a 3 month vacation and that they’re getting tired of her not showing up. She was apparently one of the best teachers they had and when she found out about how they were talking about her she quit on the spot. She called me telling me about this and said she couldn’t understand how they could treat her like this, I explained to her that as an employer they will very rarely see you as anything more than…

Work is stressful with badly focused leadership

When work is stressful, I dream about it. And oh my gosh, it's been really hard lately. Stress dreams are always in the form of zombies for me. These dreams sort of carryover subconsciously into the everyday, which makes the stress worse, but maybe someone will get a laugh out of last night's nightmare. It was the zombie apocalypse, and leadership called a meeting to figure out how to posture against it. Lots of heated discussion from the bigwigs and their underlings. Bigwig 1: “I don't understand why we have to use full stakes… can't we just poke them with toothpicks?” Bigwig underling brown-noser: “Better yet, let's just blow sawdust in the air. It's much more economical.” Chatter and chatter as they try to one up each other. Me: “Wait, you're fighting the wrong monster with that… that's vampires, not zombies! We need swords, hand grenades, and….” Them cutting me…

How can I prepare for an upcoming discussion with my boss?

I am going to demand a raise from my boss. I don’t really expect it to go well because he is a huge hard ass. I want to make sure I have a few precautions in place before I go about this. If I don’t get a raise, I am going to give him 2 weeks. I am worried that instead of letting me finish out the 2 weeks, he’ll let me go on the spot. Will I qualify for unemployment in CA if he does this? Do I need to get some kind of proof of the details of my termination? Will I need to draft some sort of document that he should sign which proves the terms of my new wage should he agree to it? I don’t want him to agree only verbally as he might not stick to his word or ‘forget’. I’ll be putting him…

How to deal with a homophobe in a professional setting.

Can I please get a vibe check on the following? As we approach Pride month, my manager mentioned that in my role in marketing/communication, we should consider how best to support the month. Our company is a relatively public infrastructure provider. I work in a small team (myself, manager and a third colleague), and on two occasions, an older colleague has expressed her disdain for Pride month, very quickly and overtly citing her religious beliefs as justification. (It’s been pretty blunt, she spends far too much time on FB surrounded by voices that support her attitude without shame) She hasn't clearly articulated her objections, I would love her to form an actually point. But she is resorting to vague and dismissive remarks that expose a deep homophobia. While I've managed to avoid direct confrontations so far, I anticipate that I may have to respond to her comments in the future.…

Outsourced hiring

So, recently accepted a new job offer but holy hell was the hiring process infuriating. The company uses a third party for the hire on process and I'm fairly sure these clowns are the reason the place is so understaffed. Normally in the past it would be simple. Go to the interview, they call back “you got the job, here's the place to get drug tested, come In after to fill out the paperwork and your good to go!” But this third party process is a nightmare. First I had to make a profile on a site that was janky as shit, took forever. Upload my identification then basically fill out all the information that I already filled for the job application. Then I had to get a witness to co sign for permission to run a background check. Got a bunch of paperwork days apart. Then I had to…

Working over a year in retail is depressing but the waste alone puts me in a bad mood.

Seriously. I’ve seen all the holidays come and go. It’s the SAME plastic shit as last year. Do people REALLY need another shitty plastic pumpkin? Do you really need another plastic Halloween town set? Basically when I walk around the Halloween section of my store I’m imagining nearly everything ending up in landfill. The fact that it’s contributing to the pollution of the earth is depressing besides the other reasons why working in retail sucks.

Being sent home for failing drug test on prescription medication?

I was drug tested at work, I hand the testing person a letter explaining why I’m on the medication and what it is, and that it will not interfere with my work. But because the test showed positive I was sent home for a few days until it can be sent to a lab to test if I have abused the medication etc. does this policy seem wrong to you?
