Cover Letter/Securing Interviews
I don’t know if this is the right group for this gripe but this is very frustrating …Anyone else heard of employers using a matrix tool to find buzz words in your cover letter from their position description to secure interviews? In the last couple of years I’ve heard I need to tailor my cover letter to make sure I use the right buzz words aka the words used in the position description. And then employers use a matrix tool to “choose” which candidates get an interview based on who used enough buzz words. I find this ridiculous because why do you want someone who cannot think, yet simply regurgitate? I’ve always thought using similar language is not meritorious, for its slightly plagiarism. Or is this actually what most employers want to see? (To me I would not work for this type of employer- for it very much seems they…
Same as the title really. Interviewed for a pretty junior position in a new field for me. I was asked what motivated me and when I explained it was career progression and professional development I was told they see it as a red flag because they want someone to stay in the role for as long as possible instead of having to constantly promote people and fill the junior roles all over again. To me, this is a red flag in itself and I’ve never experienced it before. I don’t really care, I need the job but still….

Quitting by leaving a note?
I really need some advice. I moved to a new city for a job recently (in fact I’ve only been working for less than two weeks), but the management is absolutely horrendous and incredibly rude. My boss in particular is notorious for yelling and belittling her staff. Although I haven’t experienced the worst of her antics I feel incredibly stressed because it feels like anything I do can lead her to yell/ act condescending. I hate it their so much. The question is, will leaving a note to quit hurt me further down the line? I have a very noticeable speech impediment so it is very hard for me to articulate my frustrations with someone and quit face to face, but everyone tells me this is what I should do! I have about 4 months of rent saved up so I have some time to look for a new job.…
I want to discuss with you the vital role of … (your own words about the importance of your role) … We are skilled workers, and our dedication and efforts deserve recognition and fair compensation. According to MIT.EDU’s Living Wage Calculator – the living wage for a single adult with no children is $XX.xx in the state of xx. $XX.xx in the xxx metro area. Since we make an average of $X – it is no wonder some of us are struggling! Every employee, regardless of their rank or position within an organization, deserves a living wage for several compelling reasons: Dignity and Respect: Every individual contributes to the success of the organization, and their work should be valued and respected. Providing a living wage acknowledges their efforts and recognizes their worth as human beings. Basic Needs: All employees have basic needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, and healthcare. A…
Work are weird about annual leave
I work for a small company and annual leave is a bit of a strange one cos they have to cover me and they absolutely hate it. Every request, they resist with strange tactics that seek to make me feel guilty. On Wednesday I put in a request for 1 days annual leave, 3 weeks in advance and got a pissy email out of hours about my request. I’m sick of it and thinking about bringing it up. However, our company is in a bit of trouble due to a quiet industry and I’m worried about loosing my job if I speak out. Any advice?
