Creepy Manager

So I work in a fairly small security guarding company. My new boss and old boss from the previous job are best friends and so he requested him to hire me (because he recently went bankrupt and felt guilty) and train me for this role. It’s a new position for me so I get to do a bit of HR, bit of accounts, bit of admin, basically a little bit of everything as they cannot afford a separate person for each and everything. The work is mostly divided between me and my new manager, let’s call him “Derp”. Me, Derp and my new boss are south Asian (it’s relevant, trust me). My boss can’t function without Derp, as he’s been working for him since 15 years and handles all his shady dealings for him. He recently set up my desk right opposite to his and constantly keeps staring from time…

TIL about the origins of the Ludites. They were 19th Century English textile workers who refused to work in degrading factory conditions.

The Luddites were skilled weavers who saw the power loom as a threat to their lively hoods, but it's so much more than that. Britain passed laws making it illegal to what we'd describe now as unionize and take collective action. The government also universally rolled back regulations for factory owners. Factories would pop up far out into the country side because the conditions were so abysmal, it was so dangerous they knew people would protest if it was common knowledge how many kids were pulled into looms and killed. The Ludites formed and would send threatening letters to mill owners to stop using the power looms. At night they would break into the factories and destroy the machines but leave the hand tools and other equipment alone. The Government dispatched troops to try and suppress them as a group. At one point a mass trial took place in which…

Our company ended remote working and now everyone is off sick and deadlines are missed

A couple months ago our company forced everyone back in 5 days a week. Now that school has started and there's a resurgence in COVID, it seems our entire office (~700 employees) has been contaminated (including me, as I've been off sick the entire week so far). So many people are off that it's actually causing issues, including important meetings being cancelled, projects being pushed back and delayed, and deadlines being missed. In the past, I would have probably worked from home with whatever disease I had. But apparently we're not allowed anymore, so sick leave it is.

Environmental consulting: expecting hours of overtime because YOU don’t know how to manage/your client sucks ass

One of the PM's had a client that request an earlier date for a portfolio of reports. He asked me to work overtime (yes I get paid for no I'm not going I to do it). I simply didn't respond as I got messaged after hours to work INTO THE NIGHT. THE PM SAID HE WAS LOOKING FOR MY PROGRESS AT 10PM. FUCK YOU. I'm sorry…. after I work 8 hours I'm out. I don't do overtime unless I agree to it asshole. Sorry you're looking to approve reports at my BEDTIME.

Advice Retaliation

I don't know whether to file a claim. So please let me know. Basically three years ago I had a manager go ballistic on me. Repeatedly yelling at me in front of team mates. He told me to “just do my job” but never told me how I wasn't doing my job. It was a toxic workplace and I reached out to HR. I have a disability and part of that is intrusive suicidal thoughts. The manager found out I made more money than him even though I had 3 to 5 years more experience. So the way he treated me blew my disability out of control. I also suspected that he shared my disability with other. I called the ethics line. HR came back and said they didn't find any evidence. I had a manager who understood that my former manager had a personal vendetta against me. And she…

Hurt back and not allowed to miss

I started a new job last week. I've been put on lifting 50lb boxes all day every day sense starting. I hurt my back because of it. I asked Monday to be put on light work. But that didn't happen. Made my back worse, so I took two days off work to recover. We are only allowed two days a month to call out. I was told at 1:30 pm today. That I needed a Dr note. I have to be at work tomorrow morning at 6 AM. That only gives me a little under 4 hours to find a clinic to take me with no insurance. And pay a Co pay that I can't afford. This was the text I received and everyone I've told says, “yeah thats every job. Just deal with it, suck it up and go to work, even if you don't feel like it.” I…

I need to clock out before I clock in

Ate 150mg thc so I wouldn’t go crazy at work today. Job ain’t that bad stoned and I’ve proven I’m decent at it but I don’t like the idea of needing something to get through the day. I’ve also got a bottle of kratom caps in my pocket at all time I take when I notice pain or need a boost. This isn’t going to end well. I just can’t bring myself to do stuff I find boring sober. Anyone else in a similar predicament? I’m still the best employee so I’m not sure why I feel guilty. I just don’t want days dragging on forever

How common is mandatory make-up work?

For context, my boyfriend and I are in California and he works at a law firm. This is his first full-time job and I only work part-time (at full-time hours lol) so I’m not aware if this is a common requirement. My boyfriend just got an email from HR telling everyone that they are required to be working 8 hour shifts each day. If they do not come in or leave early, they will be required to either use PTO or make up the time missed at another point in the week. They do not get paid overtime for these hours even though it means they will most likely have to work over 8 hours each day or come in on the weekends. At my job, if you don’t come in you just don’t get paid for that time and no one minds as long as you catch up on…

Payslip

So I get paid every fortnight and yesterday I got my payslip. I’ve been on holiday since the 4-18sep. On the 12th I got my payslip in which only 12hours has been paid that I worked and no holiday pay at all, I ringed my work straight away and said by today 13th it should be changed. I haven’t got a new payslip or anything from work and today is the cut off point as they send the pay through bacs. Is there anything I could do? Prior to going on holiday I asked how much I’d be paid and they said the usual amount you work so I was expecting something like 250.
