I'm a systems engineer and was working at an education tech company based in the US. We recently got a new VP who immediately fired my manager because he wasn't hitting ticket closure goals. Within a few months, he started applying more pressure to the team to work extra hours and weekends to get our ticket counts down. Some after-hours work is expected for outages and urgent patching. But this was consistent and ongoing. I clearly stated that the lack of staff was not our fault, and I would not be working excessive unpaid hours due to their inability to hire more help. The straw that broke the camel's back was when he requested that I travel several states away on 5 days notice. I told him politely that I would not be able to travel due to responsibilities at home. He promptly scheduled a “touch base” meeting in the…
Month: September 2023
I interviewed with this company at the beginning of August and it went really well. After the regular interview, they asked me to do a paid working interview. Immediate red flag in my head. I absolutely hate working interviews, as in most cases that I've heard of they were just used to take advantage of workers. I was struggling with finding work for a while, so I decided to give it a try. I got hired on and thought things were good, as I've heard good things from the boss about my preformance. Fast forward to a week ago, a person from my employer's family gets hired on and things get somewhat weird. I treat her just like everyone else, but she seems quite condescending towards me. She kept purposely mispronouncing my name, and making passive-agressive remarks about my work. It seemed like she was not even doing her work,…
I took this role 6 months ago in a commodity trading company- 12 month contract to cover maternity leave. I am not in sales- I am in logistics coordination. Most of the sales people and all the upper management and directors work in a different office. I have zero interest in sales, anyone trying to convince me of things puts me off and I do not like convincing people to spend money. A fortnight ago we had our annual staff day. By nature I am a problem solver, I am extroverted, and I am inquisitive. I also have a passion for food which is the industry we are in and I am pretty knowledgeable. These are not really traits my role needs, and they are not traits I get to exhibit at this job. During the staff day I had the freedom to do this- ask questions, lead a cooking…
I never want to go back to the office. One part of my job requires me to be in the office, and I could 100% get it done going hybrid. I truly understand all the WFH hype. Oh nothing to do? Throw my clothes in the washer/dryer/put the clothes away. Take a shower. I won't enjoy the drive to work tomorrow morning if I test negative. Some of the people I work with HAVE to be in the office because of what their job entails, so WFH is viewed as “unfair” to those people. Even though an employee who does exactly what I do for a different department works from home.
Have convinced a lot of my coworkers into forming a union. Right now I'm trying to organize to start the process but the company I work for is the type that silences and fires anyone that tries anything related to workers Rights . I'm certain I will get fired and the company will look for some random or made up reason to do it. How do I evidence that I'm forming a union and that's the reason the company is firing me?
I used to work for a gas station/retail company as a Shift Manager (think of “Race” cars). I had one month of training. During my training, my General Manager would print an “evaluation” based on my performance— she would get her information from my trainer who would share with her how I was doing and what I would need to improve upon. Keep in mind, during the entirety of the month I was training, I worked my ass off to meet their expectations, even if they were unrealistic. Moving on, my first evaluation came in. I needed to work on staying on top of food (ensuring it’s always fresh, presentable, and restocked), greet EVERY customer that came in, among other responsibilities. Cool, sounds great! I thanked her for the feedback. My second evaluation came in, except this time my trainer wasn’t involved with this feedback as she was supposed to…
Suze Orman Suggests $5M Retirement Fund
These people fucking disgust me. This bitch suggests a $5-10M retirement fund, minimum. Her reasoning? To pay for medical emergencies and costly end-of-life medical care. As my mother wasted away from cancer I was forced to watch her nestegg waste away as well. Thirty years she worked to pay off her mortgage and that house was gone is less than one. Medicare doesn't kick in until they've taken every penny you own first. I was raised by my single mother and for her entire life she told me and my sister that our home was to be our family legacy. As much as her illness destroyed her body, the loss of everything she worked for her entire life destroyed her mind. Fuck her and fuck this country.
“Employees at the Staples in Brunswick have filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the office supply store for what they believe is a retaliatory firing of a worker leading efforts to unionize.”
