Given the subreddit I'm posting this to, I probably preaching to the choir, but alas. I was a senior in highschool in 2020, once lockdown hit, and everyone was stuck inside, i sat unemployed for.. about 5 months, when I decided “fuck this house fr” and started looking for a job. Landed one with some reno company, was paid cash end of each day at 15$h which weren't bad for my first 'real' job, this lasted bout 2 weeks. Enter local landscaping company stage left, scooped me up at 13.50, with full time employment, and set me up with a truck to take home as I had no personal vehicle. I stuck with this company for 3 years, getting raises to 14, 15, then 16.50$/h with unspoken promotions alongside them. I was a crew lead by the end, and what pushed me out was the fact that the new hires…
Month: September 2023
As the title states, I have been fighting for a pay rise for the last 2 months. Last week I got an email from HR “congratulating” me on the pay rise. They only included my new monthly salary (I get paid monthly). I was previously earning $5833 per month, now I'm earning $6050 per month. A $220 per month pay rise. I'm genuinely insulted and disappointed by this payrise. Its approx 3.5% increase, whereas CPI is at 7%. I've already been applying for jobs in the $85k range, waiting for an offer. Once the offer is received, I plan on using this to force a better payrise, or threaten leaving. The first 12 months of my employment, I was working 16 hour days (no overtime) to learn everything and make sure my job was 100% done. I have now quiet quit. Bare minimum. Never go to the office. Even though…
10ish days ago roommate expressed her concerns privately to the GM about a manager bullying her and her only, loudly humiliating her in front of her coworkers and customers, as well as ignoring her and her customers' requests to speak to that same manager. 5ish days after, she's mysteriously suspended over a 1 star yelp review coming from the customer complaining about being ignored multiple times. Called her our for “harassment”. Corporate also accused her of writing other 1 star reviews, and those reviews each obviously come from other Yelp user accounts… 1-2 months ago, a lot of female workers were also being suspended for stupid shit (like selling a basic drink like moscow mule, but “it's not on the menu”) after they wrote letters to corporate reporting sexual harassment incidents. There was also a male coworker suspended and fired after he rejected his male manager's invitation to have sex…
When I was as in my twenties I had a hard time getting a job because I was considered too young and inexperienced. After landing something eventually after finishing school and working up in that job, I decided to follow a personal passion and change careers in a similar role, but a different industry. I sacrificed money and time to go back to school and take a low level job within my new sector. Now that I’ve graduated and have some experience I sometimes think that as challenging as this job market is now, being 48 makes it harder—only on the opposite end. Apparently, I have one foot in the grave and am overqualified. I was just curious what your experience with ageism has been? Compared to 10, 20, 30 years ago, how do you think it’s changed?
Let’s call it what it is
It is not a shortage of workers, it is a shortage of wages. I hate that the media is being disingenuous with labor shortage verbiage. If we can't afford to live, how can we afford to work?
Not sure if it’s true or not but came across this on Twitter / X and my jaw dropped when he admitted he fired her and then went on to say god saved him and not her . I’m a Christian myself and it’s people like him that give Christian’s a bad name , No dude god did not choose you because you’re a special little boy and decided to kill everyone else on that flight , this woman inadvertently saved your life , it was a luck, and even though it was dumb luck you still owe that woman , and you FIRED her!
I work for a hotel that’s kinda out in the woods in CA. I usually wind up taking my break inside an office where there’s other people who are answering the phone. Inbetween phone calls or if it’s slow they’ll talk to me and I became good friends with a couple of the other girls. I also really don’t like my other coworkers in my department, they’re very conservative Qanon-esque. I adon’t take my break in the lobby because guests tend to come up to me and ask questions, and I spend the rest of my work day outside so I wanna get out of the sun for my break. So that really only leaves that office for a break that will actually give me a break. Well recently apparently my manager has an issue with that. He walked in on me taking my break, talking to a girl that…

Career development advice?
I work in the construction industry in virtual design and I have to fill out a career development review with my short term and long term goals. However I'm extremely unhappy in my position, and considering leaving in the near future. My boss is incredibly distant, and every project I've been apart of has been a hot mess organizationally. I have no idea what to write as far as my goals, because I don't see myself moving up to a leadership position, and I definitely don't see myself staying at this company for much longer. TBH I have a pretty negative view on my job and my performance the last year so I'm absolutely stuck as to how I'm supposed to fill out this review..
