I recently got my B.S. is physics, and have decided to try and join one of those “upper echelon” tutoring companies. I've got 10 years of tutoring experience under my belt and I really love doing it! I found a place on Indeed that payed a whopping $40 an hour, and they accepted my application! After talking directly with the CEO, he said I'd be a great fit for the position. I turned down a few other offers before attending the “onboarding” training. (Which i was told id be paid for) During that training, I learned about the company's policies, which were pretty standard. I asked casually, “how much do you actually charge your clients?” As I figured that would be something worth knowing. The trainer dodged the question, which I thought was odd. A few hours later I get a call from the CEO again, telling me he thinks…
Month: September 2023
This should be how every worker feels. My employer is bleeding money from shitty management and workers who quit from being over worker and underpaid including me. Well, I saved all my money by living rent free with my parents awhile ago, and now that I'm on my own with rent I have enough to cover me for months. I'm not stressed at work, I don't care if they fire me. This is how workers should always feel. Instead it's like we have a Boulder pressing on us, ready to crash us if we make one wrong move.
Hi all. I wanted to ask a question especially about retail industry. I was let go of my job recently but that's not the point actually I'm very happy about it. But we were already understaffed. Now it's even worse for people there. And manager has no intention of hiring anyone. She let go of over a dozen people and none replaced. For those working at supermarkets, restaurants..etc. do you see this becoming a trend? Or is it because recession is on the horizon?
For all the lawyers here
A noble thing you can do is to offer pro bono legal advice for people who experience bullying at work, unpaid salaries etc. A lot of people can’t afford a lawyer so if you have a chance you can help people who would otherwise have no other means of getting justice served. Just one example: if 1000 lawyers would help 10 people a year in workplace disputes, that amounts to 10000 workers possibly getting justice and legal protection.
dont know what to do anymore
hi everyone. i've been stuck in my own head for a while now so i would really love some thoughts and opinions on my current situation bcs i am completely burnt out. for the last year i have been wanting a change in my work/life balance. i currently work at a manufacturing shop making good money for myself. i have no kids but i do have a wonderful gf. the problem is that i work 10 hours a day (7am-5:30) on top of that i commute to work. it takes about 45 mins to get to work and about an hour and 25 mins to get home from work bc of awful traffic. i try to not complain bc the work doesnt follow me home and i have weekends 100% off. my weekends feel like they dont even exist sometimes bc i just spend it staying home resting with…
Labor Day Lie
My company told the whole staff at a branch meeting that if we worked the Saturday before and the Tuesday after that Labor day would be a paid holiday. So I worked those days and come to find out on my check today that I wasn’t paid for that time. I contacted them and the excuse was basically that they got their wires crossed and that was true last year, but not this year. Sorry. What the fuck? That should be illegal. I would have done something with my family. Just needed to vent.
Radical Self-Care Labor Affirmations
This is primarily for funsies – but kinda not. Here's a list of the immediate ones I came up with – feel free to add your own. I'd love to hear them. Moving forward – here's how the “aggression will not stand, man”. The quality of my work is contingent on the quality of the organization and compensation. My availability is non-negotiable or an estimate. I may put work first, but it is not my life. My worth isn't contingent on my pay or productivity. All labor is valid labor. Seniority is not Superiority. Experience and growth garner respect. You get who you pay for. I do not finance the work which purpose it is to sustain me. Work relationships are transactional – and I do not owe further transactions beyond my expected transaction. (I don't have to return my pay as gifts, cards, or finance personal relationships) Having personal…
Scheduling Rant
Managers who ask for you availability months in advance, then don’t send you your shifts for weeks on end. By that time, you’ve filled in your open days with other jobs because you have to make living somehow. Then they get all pissy when you send them updated availability. Are we just supposed to put our whole lives on hold for a 10 hour per week side job? Is it me? So irritating.
Far too often people ask who they know/have worked for/with, for a reference and take it at face value that the referee will give them a good or positive reference, when called by a prospective employer. Don't be so sure. Sometimes a referee could give you a bad reference, without even realizing it. For example, they might say something like, “I know X because at work we used to chat when it wasn't busy” which will be followed by “how often was it not busy” with the answer “oh, every other day, 1-2 hours, here and there.” Basically, your referee just outed you that you have the tendency to talk too much on company time, as opposed to working. It's stupid and petty, but these are the things some HR may look at very closely. Of course, then there's the referees who will straight up give you a bad reference…
