Experiencing my first layoff

Welp, it was bound to happen at some point I suppose. I was with this company for 9.75 years albeit very under paid even though I new the software in and out and always hit my metrics. Said company has a horrible track record with layoffs though, starting when the original company sold a while ago to an investment fund or whatever… In my time there, there was 4 major layoffs – last one obviously got me. That averages a major layoff every 2.44 years. Is that normal? My assumption is no. We also had leadership changes frequently. This particular CEO at least got on the Zoom call and informed us himself I guess then abruptly ended the meeting for everyone. Classic.

I’m so tired of this job.

So I’ve been in landscaping for the last three years. I’ve advanced as far as I’m going to. They’re not going to pay me anymore money. They’re not going to provide benefits (it’s a small company, they don’t have to) and I’m over it. On top of it being hard manual labor, I’m sick of my narcissist boss. Everything has to be about him 24/7. He’s always right and we’re all just dumb and can’t do anything right. I’m sick of it. But I live in such a small community it’s hard to find something that pays this much. I only make 38k a year. And I’m salary. I’m looking now to change jobs. But I’m just tired of it. I enjoy the work but I can’t stand the boss.

Unpaid for 6 months while boss enjoys in another country; what are my recourses?

Work for a small consultancy firm with “offices” in India and NYC. Employed in India, whereas boss lives in the US (is an Indian citizen). Was hired with high hopes and dreams, and a fat pay package for an entry level position. Of the 10 employees, not one has more than 2 years of history with the firm – people keep quitting, but it’s kept under the wraps before you join. M&A slowdown happened in Jan. Boss/founding partner stopped paying us ever since. Been expected to churn out work as usual (research, minor projects) and met with humiliation and threats of spoiling my career if I don’t respond within minutes. It’s been 6 months since my (or most other people’s) dues were cleared. Since it’s a small firm, there’s no distinction between firm’s and boss’s money – absolutely no runway at all. He strategically hired people from well-to-do backgrounds. Most…

Looming layoff torment

I’m a VP for a large bank. I have a large team under me. Truly amazing people. I care for them and I love my job. For the last several weeks, my managing director has thrown around “restructuring,” “reorganization,” and “rebalancing” verbiage during large meetings. Obviously this is ominous. I am totally in the dark. I don’t know what is coming. There was another meeting this morning during which he said the same things, and I finally sucked it up and asked outright of there was a planned or potential RIF. I was given a non answer. Following the meeting, 3 dozen + individuals from my team have come up to me or messaged me privately to ask if their job is safe. I can’t tell them anything. I feel physically sick right now. I’m not even worried about myself; whatever is to come, I will be fine. I just…

Layoff advice

So where I work a lot of people are being laid off and contracts not being renewed. Instead of taking that as a sign they should self care they are losing their shit to get work done by me prior to leaving. I will give you advice: quit caring. It’s not your responsibility anymore. It’s your manager or their designated person. I’m not gonna hustle to get this done because you are leaving. Yes I understand the next person will have a different vision and want their name on it. So there is no prioritization for me to put you ahead. Take care of yourself.

Work is trying to dictate hours of salary workers. Anything I can do to fight it?

Insight; my team used to be hourly and work would dictate that we have to be in the office 8 hours and take a minimum of 30min of lunch. At the beginning of the year they moved us to salary under the guise(lie) that they were moving us up a rung on the corporate ladder and would give us a raise (pay cut with OT cut). Now 9 months later they’re trying to dictate that we still have to be in the office 8 hours with a mandatory hour for lunch. While we’re all pretty much still working 8-5 anyways and some of us 7-5, the official office hours are 9-5 and management is forcing us to take an hour or more of PTO if we need to leave early for any reason and trying to dictate the hours we’re required to be in office like we’re still hourly employees.…

Really? My one and only uniform smells bad after the third day of working in a row? What a very peculiar observation! If only there was a solution!

Jailbreaking a ThinkPad

My job just let a bunch of us go, no warning, and don't want their laptops back. It's actually a pretty decent laptop that I could use to job hunt and possibly at my next job (I'm a remote worker). Is there anyway to get around the log in or wipe the laptop so I can use it? I know it's just a ThinkPad, but I don't have a personal laptop and do data analytics, so it works great for my line of work. I'd love to not have to buy a laptop right now, especially considering I don't know when my next paycheck is coming in.

North Carolina Department of Labor

I filed a REDA Complaint against former employer with NCDOL in February 2023 – it was accepted and is pending an investigator. Has anyone filed a complaint and had them investigate it? I am trying to understand how long this process takes. The employees we reach out to will only tell us we are in line and will not give us an estimation to how long it is taking cases to be assigned an investigator. It seems unreasonable that is has been over 6 months, but understand there is backlog. Thank you!
