A few months ago, I was the Office Manager of a small medical practice. That final Friday, I was called into a meeting with my boss after having worked the reception desk all day to cover my admin’s vacation. I'll start off by saying I'm not sure if what my company is doing is legal or not since I don't know all the ins and outs of labor laws for salary employees. By my gut tells me they are using some shady practices to get out of compensating employees on certain Saturdays. Basically, my work has a policy (probably just verbal) and I don't think anyone truly knows about it, that says for any salaried (exempt) employee who works additional hours on Saturdays (40+) is eligible for a pay bump for that Saturday worked. That's all fine and dandy but what they don't mention is it needs to be your 6th consecutive day of work. So if a holiday falls on that pay week, you use sick time, have a scheduled vacation day etc. you are ineligible for that pay and will have to work that Saturday for FREE.…

Let’s suppose that you work in an office from 9-5 for 5 days a week. Let’s also suppose you are either an artist who sells drawings or paintings, a musician that does local concerts, or an athlete that participated in weekend tournaments that offer cash prizes, etc. now having a 9-5 lifestyle you would identify with the job you do 5 days a week and the things mentioned are things you “do on the side”. Now someone else who does not work 9-5 would rightly call themselves a professional in the above things mentioned and seek to do it full time even if they made less money. They would spend all day drawing things, practicing their instrument and seeking as many gigs as possible, practice their sport full time and yet as many tournaments as possible and also seek sponsorships. So I'm semi anti work. I'm extremely passionate about my career as a therapist, but also anti capitalist and totally think work schedules should be deterkine by the worker basically and I have some struggles (I'm 99% sure I'm undiagnosed narcolepsy as is my father). For his hx, he worked mostly on fishing boats and was a fireman where you work a very abnormal schedule but also sleep at work and then have days to crash. (Then he got injured and has been on disability) I got in that habit all through college and grad school working as a waitress and doing courses..weird schedule, working like 12 hours 3 days in a row then crashing. I have to vent somewhere because talking to my parents is literally like talking to a fucking brick wall… I’ve actively been trying to find a job in social-media marketing or digital content-creation for two months now. I went into this whole thing with quite some enthusiasm, seeing as I was stuck in a 4 year apprenticeship in a company that did not care for me nor teach me anything (which they are LEGALLY obligated to do in my country, mind you). I am planning on leaving my job. They promised me a certain position to entice me into working full time (I was part time) and I’m still doing my old job entirely. They told me after I got my new “position” that I would be getting no raise because “the last manager hired me at a wage too high for my last position.” I have a retail bakery job with experience and they currently pay me $18 an hour. Anyway, I have MANY pictures of how disgusting it is and how dirty they keep things. They have been so disrespectful of me (scheduling me to close then open with 10 hours between shifts, knowing I have an infant, as one example) so I want to air out their dirty laundry, literally and figuratively. I’m starting to feel more and more hopeless about living in the US… I got let go from my last job because I reported my supervisors for time theft (yes I know I could look into legal action for this but I don’t have the resources nor the will to do so). This was over a month ago and unemployment is still pending an adjudication decision and whenever I call them it says all agents are busy and forcibly hangs me up. The only office they have is in Tallahassee which is hours away from where I live. I’m out of money and if I didn’t have a supportive family I’d just be homeless. The inflation is crazy and it feels like it’s nearly impossibly for anyone in my generation not born into wealth to be independent without being crushed by debt. This is happening right now! My fiance and I work at the same retail business. We are both managers of different sections (think back of house [him] vs front and center [me]). Our store managers have TERRIBLE habits of trying to force us to “correct” eachother's “behavior”, and have us call eachother to ask for favors for the store. I have told my fiance to never follow through and have them directly call us and disencourage them from this phone tagging scheme. Not even an hour ago, they had him call me to come in at 1p, whereas I'm scheduled at 4p, because they want me to cover my worker's lunch and get overtime, which they think ill be grateful for (I am NOT).
