An older coworker says he doesn’t want to retire because he thinks not working is unhealthy.

We’re software engineers. We spend pretty much 9 hours each day sitting in front of a computer screen. Humans aren’t supposed to be sitting on our butts all day. I would say our job isn’t healthy at all. What do you guys think?

I just f-ed up.

I just left work 30 minutes early on a holiday. That doesn't sound bad but it goes against policy. I was going to use 30 minutes of pto, but I can't because of policy. I know that I won't get fired, but I am already dreading the consequences already. I hope that they just take an hour off tomorrow and just pretend like it never happened, but whi knows. I think I'm going to vomit.

Does anyone know the titles of the types of illegal dismissal reasons, like constructive dismissal, so that we can better identify it when we experience it or see it happening?

I want to be better empowered to identify potentially illegal terminations, and I've seen a few different titles of such given on this sub, but I've forgotten most of them. I do remember constructive dismissal though. Does anyone know any others? I believe there was one that looked like it had a latin-based name. There may be others too.

Staying over my scheduled shift

So I work at a hotel chain. And it’s been nothing but problems since I’ve started. I signed on as a housekeeper and I’ve been railroaded into doing laundry even tho that’s not what the application online said they needed. But they are also saying I have to stay over my scheduled shift . Am I in the wrong for leaving right when I’m supposed to or should I get in trouble by management? This is all new to me so idk. I feel like I’m being used in this place. So I just need a second opinion.

If you had a perpetuity that earned 30K a year, increasing with inflation, would you retire early?

You can also specify with rent to pay or without rent to pay.

Labor Day?

Today is Labor Day in the good old U. S. of A. It is supposed to a day where workers are recognized for the fruits of their labor. It is a national holiday. But why on this day are so many people working? I understand that some people in essential services such as hospitals, fire departments, and utilities have to work. Fires and accidents never take a holiday. Patients in medical care still need to be tended. But why are so many other non-essential employers open for business? All the big box hardware stores are open, albeit with reduced hours. I guess they figure that a person just might have an emergency need for a shovel or a bag of mortar. All the fast food places are open just in case a person needs that Big Mac and just can't wait. I'm only naming a few business that are open…

3 days into my vacay gets my gas station closed.

So it's kinda still unfolding I guess but on the third day of my 2 week vacation I get a text asking what's going on at my job a local gas station, as it has a sign saying it's closed for the next four days. After some digging corporate came in and fired 3 people and transferred the assistant manager two days into the new manager starting. After that four more people walked. I knew I did a lot but they couldn't last a week or till next order before everything fell apart. They have asked already if I can come back early. I've told them no as the wedding hasn't happened unless they wanna foot the bill for another trip. Now after the last person texted me saying they quit too I don't think I'm going back especially not for 13 an hour.

Can iHop withhold my last paycheck legally ? (OHIO)

I worked at ihop for a short while and was fired because they told me don’t show up unless I had bought a new uniform compliant shirt and told them I didn’t have money for it right now so they fired me when I called in and said I couldn’t come in because I still didn’t have money for the shirt. I had lost my apron awhile back and had been borrowing one from someone else. But my manager texted me saying she will not issue my last paycheck until I return the lost apron. Which I don’t have. I looked up some laws in Ohio and it stated that non-returned company property isn’t a legal reason to withhold a paycheck and brought this up to her. She told me it didn’t matter Cus in the employee handbook it states that if property isn’t returned you won’t receive your final…

Men: are you expected to pull extra hours at your job just because you’re a man?

This sounds like an odd question but I think I’m experiencing it. I’ve got family to take care of and the boyfriend is the one who pulls the OT. I’ve got the light cleaning, animals, plants, and cooking on top of my job – this is self elected. But the manager gives me weird looks when I say I can’t cause I’m making dinner for family or have to take care of the pet. My boss will outright skip the girl on my team and then question me why I can’t do it. I do my job, I go home. That’s how it works. Sure I don’t have biological kids- doesn’t mean there aren’t little people counting on me. I feel guilty about it and I’m sitting here like – I do more for my family than these other men and work just as hard just to hear them complaining…
