I got a job about a month ago as a cashier at a grocery store, I asked to be making the same as I had been making at my last grocery store job ($16.40/hr) but they told me they were going to pay me $16.19/hour. I needed a job pretty bad cus I just started college, so I said ok. Lo and behold, I check my pay stub and they’ve been paying me $16.12 an hour. For reference, my old job was unionized (had to leave bc of high school) and I live in California. Should I ask for my pay to be fixed and maybe even demand back pay? I know it’s not a huge difference but it seems really sleezy to me.
Month: September 2023
Why isn’t this normal?
Many employees in the US have today off, making this a three day weekend. I used to just appreciate the extra day, but what gets me now is that we are just as productive every week where we have a three day weekend. Why can’t we make this every week? The 40 hour workweek was a compromise and is wholly disconnected from human wellness or the realities of taking care of a home/family with a two-income household.
How to say to extra work in bank
I 27M has been given the charge of Service manager which involve lot of work and the amount of new work keeps on increasing . We are understaffed like any other branch in our country, I told them due to my medical condition i cant do heavy work still i get heavy rush branches may be the management has taken a toll on me , since i told them i will quit in near future . Ik this was really foolish of me but i thought they would spare me seeing i will leave in near future. My joining in new job has been delayed and i might have to be in bank little longer . The problem is im too good at my job and i have good knowledge but that a curse in banking job rather boon . Every person come to me for guidance and sometimes wants…
She’s new. She’s been with the company for 20+ years, over my team only since May though. She talks way too much and loves to brag about her things… her big truck that she has just to pull the big camper, the pool, and brand new jeep gladiator. This past week in a meeting with a couple other team leads present another lead mentioned someone on their team was taking a month off to travel with their wife and in response she says “you know we’re paying them too much when they can afford to do that.” I am FLOORED. Does she really think that anyone below her should only make the bare minimum to pay their bills and nothing more? She doesn’t know what this workers wife does, doesn’t know if he’s staying in hostels and backpacking the trip, and a he knows nothing about his story!!! So fucking…
This might be old news but I’ll elaborate on what I am referring to. A close friend has a job at a very large inner city company. After the pandemic they begin calling workers back into the office. There are many expected reasons for this but they mentioned one detail that stood out in particular: The fact that the city has a contract with the company that guarantees a certain minimum amount of workers be in the office space to fulfill that contract. So basically the company has a contract with the city that guarantees they arbitrarily come in occupy the city building thus most certainly guaranteeing they spend money there throughout their day regardless of whether it has any meaningful bearing on the companies productivity itself. I find that so deeply backwards and messed up that the city just demand such a thing when without it there could be…
Promoted in name only
TLDR: Got a promotion. Havent been paid difference in pay since Feb. I used to work in IT as a level 2 helpdesk tech. I work at a facility that outsources IT work to another company (who I was working for). The contract expired between my company and the facility I work for so now there is a new company taking over IT services for my facility. New company decides to offer the same jobs to the same people but with new company instead. Offer letter doubles my hourly rate so, of course, I take it. 2 weeks into post transition to new company my market manager (MM) gets an offer somewhere else and leaves. Old MM suggests I take over as his replacement fully endorsing me and that was all that was required for new company to offer me the job. I accept and HR says they…
No overtime due to “Unplugged Fridays”?
Hey guys, For context, I’m an hourly employee, but I work mostly remote 8am to 5pm. My boss just approved me to work overtime, so I logged about 4 hours of OT for the past two weeks. Just a bit here and there on the weekend and in the early mornings/late nights, none of which were on Fridays. The company does half days on Fridays, so hourly employees log “Unplugged” hours from 1pm-5pm (which I work through some of, but I get paid regardless). I logged the hours and they got approved by my boss. Today, I get a notification from payroll saying that they “reduced” my unplugged time so that I stay at 40 hours per week. Are they allowed to finesse hours around like this? I understand if I tried to work OT on a Friday, but my OT was always on other days. I’m in the minority…
So when I started my current job, (contract through an agency) they said it was a contract to hire position if I did well. They have extended my contract 3 times sense then. So I figured, okay they like me, I work hard, and I know all the information about the machines I work on. It's at the point where I get called when something is going wrong or someone can't figure something out. I have people in higher positions than me asking how things work and procedures we do. So the time comes when the job is posted, I get told by everyone, my coworkers, my manager, my HR rep that I am almost guaranteed the job. Mind you this isn't increasing my pay, just that I am full time and get benefits from the company. I interviewed and thought it went well! Then they tell me I didn't…
I want out of the service industry!
This may not be the right place for my post, but here it goes… I work as a server at an expensive restaurant. I was having a great day and feeling good. I served a six top and they seemed happy with my service. They ordered lots of drinks and food. They let me know they would be there awhile and would compensate me well for taking up space in my section which they acknowledged would prevent me from making money from other tables. I had no objections and did my best to treat them well. They were not my only table and we eventually got really busy the longer they sat at my table. When they finished eating I served them another round of drinks and inquired about dessert. They just wanted to chill and sip while digesting and I agreed to check on them again after a while.…
I learned a valuable lesson the hard way
I got hurt on the clock and knowing it's a small business I lied and said I was off the clock at the time so my insurance would pick it up, just got bitched at for asking to work during the day on a particular day so I can do something that means a lot to me that night. Lesson learned: Don't save the company money because they don't care about people. Now I want to just quit.
