I only called out twice this entire year, once for a family emergency and now I’m sick. My boss texted me saying they are refusing to give me sick time, now they want a doctors note or else it’ll be an un-excused absence. I’ve only called out twice this year and they’re trippin so hard over me calling out sick. Am I supposed to show up to work sick and get everybody else I work with sick while coughing all over everything? Can a job legally refuse to pay you sick time even though I have 40 hours of sick time?

UK based, just here for a moan. My fiance and i are young professionals, both with degrees and both working, he is a vet and i a paralegal, why is it that we cant afford to do anything? we rent as we cant afford a mortgage with the current rates and can barely save up enough with the price of living crisis. we're in our 30s and hate every second of work, both the pressure and the treatment we get from clients and colleagues. i cant help but think surely theres more to life than this? Surely there has to be something that we can do so that we can actually enjoy life, not just live. i know its not easy to “make it” on social media and that there are issues that come along with the job but i cant help but find myself wishing that i could do…
I hate it. My silent protest is not being within view of the camera unless I get a call or someone is at the door and I need to help them. Our branch manager stated only upper management has access to them and they have no audio which seem like obvious lies. Could there be anything wrong with how I’m going about this? Any feedback is helpful thanks.
I work for a subcontractor so this doesn't effect me I am getting paid holiday pay but the other staff is not. So they come in clock in and slam doors and mope. If I worked for the company I would have just called out sick. Fuck em. I just don't understand this mentality. Why are people so spineless these days?
They are a threat to all of our livelihoods. Even something as basic as having to tell them the call is being recorded.. if I pickup and the caller immediately starts ranting before I can say it, I'll still get written up. Retail, if I don't just take the insults or stand and listen to a guy rant about BLM, I get written up. IT.. if I'm not magically able to determine that the store is lying because they don't want to troubleshoot, or lying because they want an extra iPad, it could come back to me. This is where I'm currently at. It hasn't happened but so many people that call in will be completely freaking the fuck out, having panic attacks over nothing, and then explaining things like the Donald Trump “My uncle” quote where it's all over the place and I have to pieve together their stresms…
My new boss seems to be a bit of a control freak and I don’t know if I can deal. I’ve had so many awful bosses in the past, and she isn’t the worst but I just don’t have the tolerance I once did for this type of bullshit as I did, when I was younger. But I suck it up, because I don’t have a choice. I have a son to put through college, a mortgage to finish paying off, and a retirement account I must keep putting into…I’m so fucking glad I was born. 🤦️
This Is Possible
Big thanks to u/20caotico for the artwork
I work for a sub contractor to a government contractor (best way to describe it). It’s a full time job processing passports. I get medical benefits but no pto for a year or sick. A month ago I took a few days sick as i was actually sick. My employer (the subcontractor) emailed me showing me how much money I could have made if I had not taken unpaid time off. I have never seen this in even minimum wage jobs. They then gave me some mental help resources and told me to be on time for work. My work hasn’t sat me down and said anything about me taking a few days, only my subcontractor whose states away from me. Has this ever happened to you before?
Suspicious recruiter, perhaps a scammer?
I’ve noticed that most all of my friends are being dragged into the office on either Friday Monday or both. First I heard one persons then another and another. It would be bad enough if they had to stay online or available but it’s not that. They are being asked to physically be in office for a national holiday that is specifically meant to celebrate not working.
