I feel trapped & defeated by our capitalist society

A few months ago I got really sick, like life threatening sick. For some reason that event just made my whole reality come crashing, realized my life so far at the age of 27 is a failure, everyone else praises me for my great career and salary but I’m living for them. I just thought to myself if this was my last day and I was to look back on my life so far I’d really only feel regret that I’m waking up every morning to do something I hate, living a lifestyle truly disconnected from reality, no amount of money in my savings will ever bring me joy. A week after getting sick my boss gave me a bonus and raise, and I couldn’t even come to be excited or even thankful about it. Nothing. If anything it almost made me fall apart. Made me feel like I was…

An uncompensated 11 hour work day as part of the hiring process??!!

Fuming. I found a great job (not great pay, but seemed like a fun job) but after the initial interview they asked me to work an 11 hour day without compensation to see if this is a position I'd be interested in, and to see if I'm a good fit! WTF?? I told them I'd be happy to show up and observe what the other employees are doing, but no way could I justify working for 11 hours without getting paid. They wouldn't budge, even though I have great qualifications and would make an excellent addition to their team. I know my worth. I wish there was some awareness from companies that when you start to bring on employees, it's inappropriate and immoral to ask THE EMPLOYEE to take a loss for YOUR COMPANY'S benefit. When you start a company, the onus is on you to accept that things cost…

HR told my boss about my life event

I got married 2 weeks ago so this week I went and added my wife to my health insurance. My boss sent me a message congratulating me on my marriage. I like my boss and had told her I was engaged, though I regretted it immediately because I realized I wasn't inviting her to my wedding. Nothing against her, I think she's great, but I have a thing about “worlds colliding” so I left her out. What the ever loving fuck is wrong with HR that they think they can tell anyone my business. I don't know who else was told. I want to raise hell but I'm sure I'll be seen as an asshole. I don't want anyone holding my family against me in raise negotiations. I'm really pissed off and am thinking I should just find another job and start over. I like my job and my boss…

Not allowed to have any sort of availability as a FT employee, but select few other FT coworkers have strict set schedules? What gives?

Gonna try and explain my situation. So I am a FT employee at my company, a retail store. Recently I tried to adjust my availability so I didn't close all the time. I was happy working whatever position at whatever times so long as I got out in the late afternoon. I was happy to work a closing shift every now and then, basically trying to be as flexible as possible. When I wasn't at work one day the main store manager asked my boss where I was one night and they told him I changed availability. He apparently took that personally because the next day he pulled me aside and basically told me if I want to be FT, I have to have open availability. If I didn't want to close every night I would have to lose my benefits and get my hours cut. The issue I'm having…

Company requires 30 day notice or they won’t payout PTO… is that legal?

I signed a contract that said they require 30 days notice and I actually plan on giving 30 day notice because my boss is nice but is that even legal?

How am I supposed to open up to my boss that I am deeply raged because I witnessed a new coworker got a raise twice in a year and takes 300% more than me and got a bonus of 1000$ for finishing the year while I have been loyal to work for 6 years and got zero benefits or bonuses?

I wanna tell my boss about it. I am gonna be looking into other jobs and I'm not in a critical position but I feel so down about this situation that I can't look at their faces anymore and at the same time I wanna get my point across without sounding pathetic or rubbing favours in their faces.

My boss told me to watch my tone and I don’t know why

I work in retail at the airport so obviously it is a busy and stressful environment. I came back from my break and I was giving directions to a new guy to another shop of ours to cover their break when I got a phone call from the stand-in Team Leader (Our mangers aren't in on weekends so we have team leaders instead, and our usual team leader was on holiday today). She asks where the guy covering breaks is and I explain the situation. She hangs up on me and then messages me saying “watch your tone with me, I don't want to hear that ever again”. I'm confused more than anything because I was talking normally and answered her questions. I have a bit of a cold so I'm wondering if she thought I was being rude bc my voice is a bit lower than usual? I replied…

A warning about companies digging into your private health business

More and more I am seeing posts from people who say in job interviews, they are being asked very personal questions, and someone in a different sub said she was given a pre- employment psychological profile and asked about her sexual orientation. About 10 years ago I worked for a small firm in the DFW area. They sent out an email that ordered everyone to turn in to HR, a detailed list of all their 1) current or past health conditions, such as diseases 2) hospitalizations and surgeries you've had in your life time 3) how many times they had to see a doctor yearly for any reason 4) list of any medications you take and the dosages. It wasn't optional for us to give this information, we were demanded to turn it in. I'm not sure how many people did. I did not. I was later fired. Needless to…

Tips For Building An Exit Strategy

Back in February of 2022 my supervisor told me they were leaving, after 20 years with the company. I was sad to see them go but as their second in command I was excited to interview to fill their vacancy. It took upper management a month to get around to advertise the position, and another three months to interview candidates. During this time I was expected to lead the team without a title change or a pay raise. I interviewed, and no one was hired to fill the slot 'cause none of the applicants had any supervisor experience. Company stopped looking for a supervisor and instead shuffled things around. I got a small raise and a title change but no real supervisor authority. Now, a full year later, a year of my putting my best foot forward, increasing efficiency and exceeding expectations the company is thinking for soliciting for a…
