My Mom can’t afford to move jobs, but may well be laid off soon. I don’t know what to do…

Hey. I think I just need to vent. For some context, I make $17 an hour, and can barely afford rent, power, internet, and phone bill. My mother makes $22, and has health insurance, car insurance, and other bills that I don't, and can barely afford. If she moves jobs, their starting salary is $17 an hour. Her job has been slowly moving the goal posts for her production numbers to unreasonable standards, which mom hasnt been meeting. They're planning to lay off a bunch of people, come the start of October. We think she might be one of them. What's worse is, my little brother is doing online school and needs a body double to do his work. In person school terrifies him, because he used to have a group of bullies who would beat on him. My mother is caught between a rock and a hard place. She…

What do you do about nepotism in the public sector?

So, I have noticed that someone at work (lets call her Sandy) has been given a free pass at things and pretty much has a laid back attitude with this said employee. Meanwhile, the other 7 of us are bouncing around the department wearing multiple hats and are killing ourselves, as we are assigned to do. I have asked the manager about Sandy and I am given a generic Chat GPT response. I am not sure if there is a relationship there, but I feel not saying something is not gonna help here. I would feel better knowing that I was overreacting or it was a simple misunderstanding or due to disability. What can be done here?

Company trying to force me to work after firing? Is this Legal?

Hey there, so maybe ya'll can help me. A little back story: I am located in the USA and my contract has a clause that my company needs to pay me 3 months severance if they fire me w/o cause. I was recently fired w/o cause because the company thinks they are going under. I was told that I either had to sign away my benefit and go to “at will” (I think it's called) where they require zero notice, or I would be fired on the spot. This is to avoid having to pay me anything after the company folds in a few months. I said I wasn't signing away my 3 month severance and was instantly given my written notice that I was to be terminated in three months. They want to get as much work out of me as possible to try and salvage what they can,…

Story about my first and only job in sales.

I lived in Decatur, Illinois for nearly 10 years of my life. It has no jobs, an extremely polarizing population of aspiring gang leaders and racist hillbillies of equal amounts black and white. It is a hellhole. I got a job working at OSL. OSL is a company that works out of Walmart to sell phones. Here are some basic rules about working at OSL: As a sales position, you get paid minimum wage ($13.00) and then get commission pay for every phone plan you sell. Because no one buys a phone at Walmart, you are encouraged to trick people into buying phones they don't want or need. My coworkers were equal parts racists (against me, I'm white) and conmen (my boss was literally breaking the law consistently and I didn't realize until I quit). I do not work for Walmart. I work for OSL. I do not have to…

I was fired for complaining about a hostile Co-worker and I left the building to distance myself form the situation.

A co-worker verbally attacked me last week as soon as I arrived at work. I told the boss I would not tolerate it. After saying OK, the boss just kept working. I left the building. I was contacted by the VP hours later to explain what happened. This is my third documentation of his behavior, and nothing has resulted in any action. My instructions were to stay at home until they told me what was happening. I left the building because I wanted to de-fuse the situation and did not want to get the other employees in the middle of it. I was told before, that when I am in a situation that I'm feeling that someone is being hostile, that I should walk away and remove myself before things could escalate. I got a call five days later saying that they were terminating me because I abandoned my job.…

Americans—Join the Fight for 5.5

The 40 Hour Work Week is Archaic & Exploitative In 1595, King Phillip II of Spain signed into law: ”Law VI That the workers work eight hours a day distributed as appropriate.” Before the Industrial Revolution, working less than 8 hours per day was common: “One of capitalism's most durable myths is that it has reduced human toil.. This myth is typically defended by a comparison of the modern forty-hour week with its seventy- or eighty-hour counterpart in the nineteenth century. The implicit — but rarely articulated — assumption is that the eighty-hour standard has prevailed for centuries. The comparison conjures up the dreary life of medieval peasants, toiling steadily from dawn to dusk. We are asked to imagine the journeyman artisan in a cold, damp garret, rising even before the sun, laboring by candlelight late into the night.” These images are backward projections of modern work patterns. And they…

Do I tell my Co-workers that they will get fired?

I work in management. Most of my manager colleagues are getting fired as I was told by my boss (the CFO). The reason is purely financial. I will not get axed as I bring more value to the table than my colleagues (CFOs words). These people are hard working and doing their jobs as best as they can and do a pretty good job. Now, this can happen in a week or by the end of the year. I have been warned that if I say anything I'll be in trouble. Ive kept this secret for two months now but its eating me on the inside. Whenever we have meetings and discuss plans for next year or next quarter all I can think about is that they wont be here. So, do I tell them and risk my well being or keep this shut and wait for it to happen?
