My GF was just hired onto a new position for a new facility at her company a few months ago. She overheard her coworker offhandedly mention her wage and my GF realized that she is making less than this coworker despite having a position with higher technical knowledge. She was happy that her coworker was making said amount but also felt a little frustrated that she had to fight for the wage she is at. I have extatically told her about organizing her workplace, talking about wages with the rest of her workers, etc. but she isn't a button pusher and her direct manager wouldn't have the power to do anything about it anyways. This company has a history of breaking up unionization efforts, specifically breaking up staff by transferring them to different positions at different locations. That is not a risk she is willing to make at this time…

Being asked to cross the picket line
I work for one of the large corporations where workers are currently striking. I am salaried and am not part of the union and have been informed that I may be redeployed as a scab, and may otherwise be terminated. Do I have any recourse here?
To people immersed in toxic work culture mentality I probably seem petty. They’d say “go above and beyond and you might get a promotion”. But I absolutely detest the feeling of being exploited in work. Whether it’s being asked to do unpaid overtime (when it’d bring you below minimum wage), or engage in work requiring higher skill/responsibility than your pay & job title etc. I actually don’t mind my job, it’s not what I want to do long term, it’s essentially a career break as I have some health issues, an administrative position to keep me in the swing of things while I make a long term decision about whether I can actually handle my actual career. I work at a university so most people are very values based. Usually when people ask me to do something it’s reasonable and I’ll jump to it. I’ve never complained. Lately more responsibilities…
I was off on Tuesday and my boss asked if I could come in, I didn’t have anything going on so I said yes. My baby had a very high fever and when I called her Dr they told me to take her into the er right away So I called my boss and informed her that I wouldn’t be in today because I had to take my baby to the hospital and I texted the work group chat to try to find coverage for my shift Well no one cared or picked up my shift which was whatever I didn’t take it personally. But then my boss called while I was at the er trying to help my baby feel better and informed me since I didn’t get anyone to cover I was being written up. So I got on indeed, got a new job, and I start tomorrow.…
I’m currently the assistant manager of a Spa, and I’ve decided that I don’t want to work for my employer any longer. The reasons I want to quit are all over the place, but to keep it brief, the reasons consist of problems with my boss who seems to threaten my position often, doesn’t respect time I take with my family, saying that I’m still within 90-days and can be demoted from my position, as well as my main co-worker being extremely rude and questioning my authority, customers are very rude, and overall I’m just not feeling it anymore. I don’t live in a state that requires a 2-weeks notice, but I don’t know if I should just up and leave. I don’t plan to ever return to this specific employer, but I also feel like at one point they were good to me, I do like some of my…
Indirect work harassment, what to do?
Hello guys, I just wanted to get your advice on what I should do in a situation that’s been bugging me for some time now. I work online with my team basically scattered everywhere around the world, but we sometimes have these in-person gatherings in certain headquarters. I have a colleague that I’ve had communication with in the past year through our work chat channel, normal work conversation for the most part. He’s not in the same country as me. I was noticing he was writing to me a lot on this chat program, but I was extremely disturbed after this first real meeting with everyone. We had an event where there was a pool and at one point I was walking away with another female colleague and notice him coming after us, addressing me only and asking if I brought my bikini with me. And after that specifically addressing…
High Pressure Fear Based Tactics
Both of these jobs made me jump thru onerous hoops designed to torture me. The first one was debt consolidation company and the lady who interviewed me said that most debt specialists make 6 figures after taxes. Is anyone in this group in that industry? Can you confirm? I don't know whether or not that “6 figures” claim was legit. I have a feeling employers just say that to prey on your greed. Anyway, for the first 4 days you go thru training then on the morning of the 5th day you are given an oral test and if you fail the oral test, you are fired on the spot. No second chances. No room for improvement. That is how BRUTAL they are. A guy even got fired because he accidentally clocked out early. The screen went black, there was no communication on the part of the manger so this…
What did the ancients mean when they said they wanted someone to “identify and implement changes to workflow and configuration to optimize performance” and “monitor and analyze performance metrics to continuously improve effectiveness”? Did they ever find the motivated self-starter with a positive attitude and a customer-focused approach that the prophecies spoke of? We may never know. But we do know that this civilization apparently had no system of numbers, because they were incapable of including a salary range anywhere.
What is your biggest work pet peeve?
I can't stand when people send an IM with just a greeting and nothing else. Please for the love of god include what you want in your first message. Don't just say Good Morning and wait for a reply. Its a waste of time having to reply to your greeting and then you finally get around to telling me what you want.
