How to be a good boss
I'm currently working towards opening a business, and as someone with years of dealing with bad bosses or management at jobs I want to be a good employer when i get to that point. I have a lot of things from personal experiences I want to do or know not to do. However I would like to hear from others what you would want a boss to be like.
Is this normal programmer wage nowadays
I work in a small (20-30) person business, as a salary employee I’m expected to “stay until the job is finished” everyday and this is shown most through my manager who works at times 60+ hour weeks. I have no problem leaving on time. I’m mad when I leave 15 minutes late but some people at the job work wayyy too much, with no tracking of OT! Do people not have responsibilities or hobbies or family outside of work? The best part about my day after work is when I go and see my girlfriend, that’s it. Meanwhile my boss asks why I don’t go to after work social gatherings or don’t want to be involved with the work culture, I’d much rather be involved with my family and the family I’d like to create one day! It makes me feel like the crazy one… I’m only in my 20s…
WFH is dead
Ever since Covid my place of business had a fairly liberal WFH policy, of which we created on site schedules. This worked out pretty well, almost all of our work got completed. However, This year since my kids have been back in school we have been sick off and on more than normal. Today I get a message from my boss saying that WFH is to be almost gone unless predetermined and approved. He works 100% from home since he doesn't have an admin account for our system. I took today as a WFH day because wife and kiddo were sick. A coworker seemed to take that personally. I could tell by the way he responded during a meeting and asked if I was to be on site today. Then we get the email. WTF. This dude btw never takes PTO or sick time. I just don't understand the mindset.…
I don't want to give away too many personal details, but I'm the manager at a care center in Maryland and one of my team leaders just let me know that our boss has been having her work 3 overnight shifts per week with her own child and has NOT been paying her. She's an immigrant and my boss is absolutely taking advantage of her, but she doesn't want to report it herself. Is there anything I, as her manager, can do to get an investigation started? Preferably without listing my name, but it is what it is at this point. I'm just trying to get my people paid
What are we doing?!
How are we allowing the current state of things to just go on? It sounds so cliche when people say “we’re in the Matrix”, but holy fuck we really are. I can’t find an ounce of happiness in the justification that we should be working 8-10 hours a day to barely make it by. What the f happened to solidarity in the United States? In the world? Why are we not in the streets protesting? Everyone just goes about their day fully complicit and okay with our reality. There are people with billions of dollars, literal pallets of money, walking around and taking private jets, while others struggle and starve. How the f can we be so selfish and comfortable? Have we become that sedated? The American dream is dead. We are modern day slaves.
My boss is disrespectful
I just joined an accounting firm and one of the partner is very disrespectful to me. Usually I would ignore what he says because he is in his 60s and usually rude to others as well. But today he commented “use your brain” for not performing a task I didn’t even knew I had to. I didn’t said anything and not sure what I should do next, should I speak to my direct Manager who is also a partner. I like working with others in the firm, but can’t stop feeing disgusted by this person’s behavior and how he treats me.
I wrote this Google review for a company that recently let me go out of nowhere. I just got a cease and decist letter threatening to sue for libel and slander if I don't remove the review from Google. I stand by what I wrote, me and my loved ones were shocked when it happened. I always respected the company and take my profession seriously. What should I do?
I (19 F) got was asked to work a paid trial / training shift for a busser job at a local restaurant to me. It was my first job. I worked the 9 hour shift while being trained at the same time and the manager asked me to come in the next day for more training. When I came in he told me the owner wanted a man for the position and that it was not going to work out. When my mother (my only way of getting to work at I don’t own a car) asked the manager about it he said it was because I sat down. I did so on my 15 minute break in the employee area and was told nothing about it while working or the next day. Only asked if I was doing ok. I even asked the manager if taking my break was…
