Sup ya'll! I'm in MA. I'm in school for one more semester in the Spring and then I graduate. Currently I work three days a week (Tues, Thurs, Sat). There are members of our staff who only work two days a week (both of them only work Sun, Mon). This is a barely above minimum wage job and it has no real influence on my life it's just a means to make money because I live alone in an apartment and have to pay my bills while I'm in school. Starting in January, I'll likely have to be only available to work Friday and Saturday (16 hours). Fridays are typically fully staffed so I feel like they'll only be able to put me on Saturday. I am working in a field that doesn't require an extreme sense of urgency.. I am not saving people's lives or performing complex surgeries, etc. I am planning my work well ahead of time and everything is usually getting done before its due. However, it feels like the hustle culture is on the rise in that company and working longer hours/working on the weekends is encouraged more and more often, but never rewarded. The worst part is that there are people who willingly take that crap and even seem to be super happy about it. We literally have people who are proud of skipping lunch breaks so they could be focused on work even when there are no urgency at those things at all! For context: I work at a country club and work at the bar that is stationed by the pool. (And work two separate positions while there, but that’s not important to the story) I work the coveted weekend shift /j and almost never call off. My co-worker took over my single weekday shift because I have night classes. Since then, she’s gone dark side and does everything in her power to get on my nerves. When I ask for help from my manager, she sides with my co-worker for Idk why (probably because said co-worker is older than me). I also do all the heavy lifting with restocking, inventory, running orders myself, etc. For all the work I do, such shitty treatment was enough. Once I got off work the same day, I sent my 2 weeks to all three of my managers.
Our management team over the past year was tasked with finding out why our entire department reported being exceptionally unsatisfied with our jobs. Everyone has the same complaints – overworked, underpaid, and no possibility of advancement. Their first initial response? They held a little virtual rally and basically told all of us, “we hear you, but here’s why you’re wrong and why the company is actually awesome!” When that shockingly didn’t work, and the responses to their supposedly anonymous surveys got even worse, management was directed to again find out why that was, (surprise – everyone still had the same complaints) and this time create a little plan to improve things. i (23 F) recently started working at the wegman’s corporate office training for the pharmacy call center position and recently lost my job because i would occasionally steal food from the cafeteria bc i can’t afford to eat there. i’m not proud of it but since my grandfather suffered a horrendous injury it set back my family financially so i resorted stealing to food from the wegman’s corporate cafeteria when i figured i couldn’t afford to eat there everyday. when i came to the attention to the higher ups, i offered to recoup the losses they still fired me saying they would treat a store employee the same. part of me feels stupid another part of me feels angry that corporations don’t have a shred of empathy for their employees. that being said fuck danny wegman’s.
