$15 minimum wage

I stg if I hear one more conservative redneck complain about service workers making a $15 minimum wage I’m gonna lose my shit. Instead of getting mad about workers getting paid more why not get pissed off at the greedy af corporations, shareholders, and CEO’s who take all the profits off other people hard work? Where they cut corners at any point just to make a profit the next quarter. You would think it would make them go “yeah i do a lot for this company maybe we should all get more of the profits we produced”, but Americas propaganda machine is amazing at how it turns workers against each other and vote against their own interests. It’s maddening.

Want to unionize, but have a blended workplace of salaried and contracted workers – new and need help

Hi all, I (and a couple coworkers) would like to unionize our workplace. We are located in BC, Canada. The company we work for is a Not for Profit that the CEO and COO are profiting off of. The rest of us make an average of 20% less than the average salary for our jobs in our city. The COO of our organization recently attempted to get all the salaried workers to sign an “employee pamphlet” that goes against multiple laws outlined in our province’s employment standards act. Most recently a longtime coworker was terminated without cause following a dispute about him being given paternity leave. That’s a side note for context. It has been kept intentionally muddy as to who is employed under which terms, with many employed as contractors and some salaried. The organization is an academy. The teachers are contracted and pay the not for profit a…

When I went on paternity leave my old boss really pressured me to “keep on top of things”. I left my work phone in the office, deleted all unread emails on the day I returned, and never regretted it once.

“I am on paternity leave from [x] until [y], a period of seven weeks. During this time my emails are not monitored, and when I return on [date] I will delete all unread emails. If your email is important, please get in touch after [date] or contact [my colleague].” I promised my boss, in front of the other directors, that I would personally call and apologise to any customer or anyone else outside the business who took issue with my Out of Office message. Guess how many people I had to call? This came to mind because I just found out he’s left “to seek opportunities elsewhere” after half a dozen people accused him (accurately) of being a bully. His golden handshake, for being a bully, is approximately twice what my annual salary was when I worked for him. Life’s a bitch, but at least I didn’t check my emails…

It would take an average US citizen 33.3 years to afford a 20% downpayment on an average house.

The math: Take an average US citizen making $15/hr, taxed 20% is taking home $12/hr $12/hr is $25,000/year If they saved 10% of their paycheck each year that's $2,500 at the end of the year (average amount the boomers saved in their 20s and 30s). An average home in the US costs ~$416,000 right now, give or take where to live. 20% downpayment is $83,200 $83,200 / $2,500 = 33.28 years to afford the downpayment. Now if they aggressively save, don't have kids, eat ramen, cut cable, and save 50% of their paycheck each year: Saving 50% of their take-home pay is $12,500 at the end of the year. It would “only” take 6.7 years to save up for the house, but you couldn't do much. Essentially after college, If you completely skip your 20s, you could have a house by the time you are 30. And remember, a…

Boss deeply praised me in front of the other managers for my high performances, than laid me off one week later. What I have to think?

I worked for a huge (and extremely profitable) department of a tech company. My boss deeply praised in front of coworkers and others managers. I had very high performance for a long time and they are very happy for how much I helped the department. One week later he told me that I'm laid off, account deactivated at the end of the very same day. I asked “why? I'm such a good worker and you know it” He answered that I'm “not a good fit”. No more explanation. There were no fights, no work mistakes, the environment was great with coworkers and everything. It's simply no sense that all of a sudden I got laid off and neither boss or other managers have anything to say about. They paid me all regularly and an honest severance, it's just that I don't understand the meaning of cutting a great worker without…

Boomers had it easy.

Sitting in the office now, listening to boomers talking about their upcomming Carribean cruises, after they early retire in couple months in the age of 57, after working 35 years in the same company. They had a white collar job for best part of this 35 years, the same job I’m doing now for half of what they got on a blue collar contract, knowing well I will never be able to afford the same lifestyle, purchase multiple properties and switch cars every 2 years like they do on a single pay check. The good times are gone…

Soon to be retired colleague

I have a colleague who's about to retire. I really enjoyed working with her, but we were never really close enough to see each other outside of work hours. And she could be my mother. I wrote her a nice personalized note in the happy retirement card. And she keeps telling me she wants to keep in touch, add me on Facebook and have my personal e-mail. Maybe I'm different, but I don't get that attached to my colleagues. There are some I like more than others, but they're still people from work. I don't feel like keeping in touch?

Keep getting beat in the final rounds

I've been obsessed with this rejection letter: Hello Chicken Dinner, Thank you for your patience and time as we have gone through the hiring process for [the job]. I'm informing you today that we have decided to go in another direction with a different candidate who has accepted the role, so unfortunately, we will not be bringing you onto our team. I want to make sure you know that we were incredibly impressed by you. Your analysis, smarts, and energy were invigorating for us and we enjoyed talking to you. However, this was a very competitive pool. We had 222 applicants, and only moved forward 13 candidates – so barely 6% I'm going deep into multiple rounds of interviews and keep coming up short. I think a few things are happening. We are too globalized. Since anyone across the nation can apply for these jobs online, you may be the best…
