Hi! I recently started a job at a restaurant; the boss is nice enough and I like my coworkers. However, it is finals week and I’m drowning in homework. I should have requested off but I didn’t. I’m meant to come into work twice this week but I don’t know if I can without falling so behind in school. I have some other job interviews lined up + savings. I’ve never just quit a job without giving two weeks notice. What should I do?
Month: November 2023
I really hate it when bosses/managers think it's constructive and okay to talk down to me and disrespect me and be nasty towards me, especially when it's totally unnecessary, like when I'm literally just doing what I've been asked to do and they still have to interrupt me to power trip for no reason. It absolutely makes my blood boil and I've walked away from every company who does this because I can't stand giving a third of my life to places that treat me like my time isn't respected and treat me like a misbehaved dog or something. I'm genuinely wondering if there are places where people will respect me and make me actually enjoy coming into work and doing my job?
2 years at the company
Been at a company for 2 years now (started January of 22) and the company does annual performance reviews for salary raises in April. When April 22' rolled around, I was told by my then boss that it was too early to review my performance because I had only been at the company for 3 months or so which made sense to me. The problem is that in February of 23', the company laid off 20% of the staff and announced a freeze on all raises. Flash forward to almost the end of 2023 and I have yet to have a raise during my time at the company that included 2 title changes (that acted as promotions minus the raise). I was told that I would get a raise once we hit a certain revenue number for 8 weeks in a row, but I don't think we are even close…
Work hard get more work
Boss flat out told me to schedule my highest performers during the busiest hours (which happen to be the later shifts no one wants). I stated my concern that there was no motivation for my high performers if they only get rewarded with more work while low performers get the slower and more desirable shifts. I was told to find a way to explain it to them so that they do not see it that way. Come on My highest performer practically begged me for a particular shift that I am being forced to give to a new hire instead. I hate this.
See through uniforms
We just got new staff shirts. They're ugly and no one likes them, but that's not really my issue. Issue is, they are white. And the material is incredibly sheer. Also, it's that clingy polyester material that clings to you. Im going to be upfront I have DD boobs and a few extra pounds on me. When I'm bloated the shirt clings to my “belly pooch”. It makes me so uncomfortable so I wear a jacket over it. Well today, we all get a group message from my boss saying jackets are not allowed to be worn over the shirt. (Hes a man). I'm wearing a padded sports bra and a tank and you can still see my nips through the shirt. I'm honestly so upset it's making me tear up, I know its dumb to cry over but seriously it makes me so uncomfortable. Just had to rant
https://www.mselaborlaw.com/news/marriott-banquet-servers-san-francisco-be-awarded-approximately-9-million-unpaid-gratuities I saw this article that happened a few months ago. I work for a Marriott in banquets in California getting paid $15.50 + gratuity. Every check I've gotten, they never itemize the gratuity to see how much I made per day, they just add a random number. We have meetings regularly about the tips and HR is very, very indirect. Lies a lot. The lady in charge told us she would give us itemized checks. That she didn't want to lose any of us. Well nothing. Meeting after meeting and she acts like she will do it and never does. I checked the money that each client spends on banquets. Massive amounts and the server fee high enough. Well HR tells employees that they split the gratuity among everyone depending on how many hours they contribute, even housemen are part of the pool. Still though she doesn't show any…
Assert dominance
Ask your interviewer their biggest weakness.
A coworker copy pasted one of our patient’s names into our group chat. She proceeded to joke about how the name sounded like a cuss word, and that it was a set up to make her cuss. Another fellow coworker joined in by saying “oh wow that does look like a cuss word.” As someone whose name is very ethnic and different, I felt very offended. Especially, when the culture that the name comes from is a beautiful culture that I admire so much. (Vietnamese) Not a single manager or supervisor stepped in, or stopped the conversation. I decided to let a manager know, privately that this was offensive, and all they said was sorry you feel that way. Thats it. Today, my friend who is also a co worker, called out for having to go to the ER again. She has a disability and has been in and out…
PTO policy changed with zero warning
My job gives us 15 days of PTO – 14 for personal use, 1 for a “mandatory PTO day” on the friday after thanksgiving. Stupid, but whatever, they gave use 15 days for that reason. They just announced that next year, the amount of mandatory days jumps from 1 to 3. We still only get 15 days – but now only 12 of them are for personal use, 3 are “mandatory” apparently it's legal but I'm still fucking mad about it
I live in an at-will state, not sure if that makes a difference. My job requires a lot of travel using my personal vehicle and I have to report my mileage daily. I recently found out by talking to a colleague in the same position that the way I was taught (by my slimy previous supervisor) to put in mileage was wrong and that I should be calculating my mileage differently. I felt completely taken advantage of and deceived but wanted to correct it in a professional way. I explained to my current manager the way that I have been inputting mileage in the payroll system and how it differs from that of my other traveling coworkers. He was immediately on my side and we are working to fix it moving forward and to get back reimbursement for the miles that I’ve been missing. Here’s the problem: he tried to…
