Eye care company National laid me off today. I’ve given them all these years of blood sweat and tears of building a company that was a mom and pop to a publicly traded company. I worked in their IT Infrastructure team. 30 people were laid off right before Christmas. I don’t want to ever work for corporate rate fucks again. The CEO touts themselves as a “caring” company on his employee meetings. Actions always speak louder then words. These fucks are – Americas Best, Eyeglass World, Vision Center WalMart and Online.

Oh yeah. That makes a difference.
Ranting About Walmart
Sorry for the long post in advance but I just need to vent. So, I stoped working at Walmart almost 3 months ago now and they still haven't given me my final paycheck. I had direct deposit set up and after I left (well, to be fair I ghosted them because of what it was like, but we'll get into that later). They initially did deposit what would be my final paycheck and then later they reversed my final paycheck out of my account ($500!!). Which seems ridiculous because what if I had spent that money, I would've been charged overdraft fees… Apparently this is a thing, and for your final paycheck they give you a “Money Network Check” and it's always a paper check, I had no idea about this but okay, it's whatever. So, since mid-October I have been calling the store to see when I can come…
The company I work for makes hand over fist $$$. They are valued at 69 billion dollars! Everyone hear is on a paltry salary. Why are they asking us to donate? Its bizarre.
I keep seeing people with business degrees and corporate backgrounds on Tiktok and YouTube talking about how no one is hiring. Meanwhile, my 17 yr old is in his HS trades program has local contractors waving job applications at these kids with starting pay of $24 an hour. And my jealous clerical ass is seething because it's taken me 16 years of Federal Service to get to $30 an hour. $24 an hour for basic carpentry and construction skills. Dang. He might actually be able to buy a house one day and I can live in his basement!
Joined this sub a while ago and I'm honestly surprised by how little communist/marxist/socialist ideas are discussed here despite the flagrant dystopian nature of some of the testimonies. I understand people mainly come here to let off steam and look for advice on “delicate” workplace situations, but his place should also be riddled with folks talking about building alternatives to late capitalism (or whatever you wanna call it – the problem behind all of this nonsense). We have nothing to lose but our chains.
Is Grandpa Joe our mascot?
My employer is changing our attendance and break policy, and doing away with morning and afternoon paid breaks, so I figured I'd just double check if they're actually allowed to do that. (The answer is yes.) But then I stumbled across this little gem: What is the maximum number of hours per day my employer can make me work? Theoretically your employer can make you work 24 hours a day unless you are under the age of 16. (emphasis added) I'm sorry… what? Does this not seem like an insane thing for a human being to say? This seems like such a self-condemning statement! They're essentially saying, “By not quitting you're saying you're fine with employers treating you however they want, and the government's fine with it, too.” I get it. America has terrible labor protections. I don't know why I'm still surprised. But I'm not crazy, right? This just…
Board (bored) Dinner
*Okay here goes!* (voice of Jim Carrey) I've been working for an Aussie charity for over a year now. Initially I was self-employed but after the CEO practically begged, I agreed to go on as an employee (she cited cost saving goals). There have been numerous issues at the workplace, from bullying to undermining us staffers and lack of practical supports. this means ive had to pay for some work-related travel costs and am owed about $2k in total. This aside, the CEO had a 4 month resignation, which I've learned she was 'tidying up' dodgy financials in the background pre-departure. The 'board' of this place is a joke. Recently after moving I had to buy a car – for the first time ever I asked for an advance on my upcoming fortnightly salary – only by 5 days. I even said just pay me to the date worked today…
