Schedule your illnesses or you’re fired :)

I have mild insomnia which for the most part doesn't especially impact my life, because my job is/was very part time. Unfortunately, the other day was not one of those times and I ended up needing to call out so I texted my supervisor and she tells me to email the boss, so I do (and then don't hear back from her aside from an extremely snarky message thirty minutes after my shift was supposed to start.) I was told it was an unexcused absence which, whatever, I'm more irritated that it meant I wouldn't get the 100$ at the end of the season for not missing a day. Next day I get ANOTHER email from my boss telling me “employment will be subject to evaluation with any further unexcused absences.” Because I didn't request off two weeks in advance through the scheduling app. Like I'm sorry do you think…

Performance reviews are a fucking scam.

Let me tell you why performance reviews are the biggest scam in the corporate world. I recently got a new job in a new industry and, like anyone making a career switch, I had to learn on the job. Sure, I made a few mistakes—who wouldn’t? It’s part of the learning curve. But guess what? My probation period got extended. They claimed I needed to be more independent. Fine, I thought, I’ll show them I can handle things on my own. So, I put my head down, worked hard, minimized mistakes, and made decisions based on my judgement and data instead of constantly checking in with my manager. I thought I was doing exactly what they wanted. But then, surprise! My probation got extended again. This time, they said it was because I wasn’t taking initiative and actively asking for feedback. Excuse me? First, they tell me I need to…

Defended a coworker and it’s backfired

I defended a coworker today who is on a 45 hour contract who was getting made to do way more hours. I am a head of department so felt right to have a conversation with HR and she literally said I should get on with my own job and not listen to others. I then spoke to my general manager and he said he’s sick of everyone being so emotional to which I kind of said that’s his job he manages people. For some reason the two interactions caused a panic attack and I had to leave. I’m now dreading going back in tomorrow. Please help

Kitchen with wet concrete as we work

I work within a fast-food style restaurant with a open kitchen. This kitchen floor is utterly devastated as several large holes riddle this line and the company has finally decided to repair these floors by filling the uneven terrain with new concrete; however, the upper management beyond our store (who are discussing the plan with our kitchen floor) are rumoured to pour wet concrete while not closing the store, requiring us to continue cooking for guests. I can't fathom that this could actually happen as the sound of it is ridiculous, but I still ask the question to this subreddit for advice: can my workplace continue to have the store open while also having wet concrete layer the kitchen floor?

This manager works with me often and doesn’t do anything, just using her phone. What to do?

I work at the breakfast buffet of this hotel and sadly nobody wants to work because they don't make a lot of money. I'm there since I'm full-time. For the past 2 weeks this manager girl comes to help (and she told me honestly she doesn't like it and the fact that she has to wake up so early) who got a promotion and she is only 22. No previous experience, I don't even know how she got the promotion out of everybody. We have no food and beverage director, pretty much nobody else. Anyways, she comes in late and she just stands at the register texting her bf non-stop. She pretended that it was work related which was BS. Then she disappears using excuses that she has to help the restaurant to open when there is already somebody there. I have to check people in, refill food, brew coffee,…

Had to call out sick, Boss is refusing doctor’s note

So yesterday I got sent home, because I was starting to vomit and had felt nauseous, dizzy, clammy, and weak all day. I was dehydrated from spewing out of both ends. Apparently a customer heard me vomiting in the bathroom. And being food service, food borne illness is a problem. So the minute I got out of the bathroom after vomiting, I asked my manager and people in the department if I could go home. They said yes. The store director came over and asked if I was sick, I said yes, which is when I learned a customer had heard me. Store manager said to go home and asked if we had coverage, we did, so I went home. Absolutely nothing was said about needing a sick note, a doctor's note, anything. Several people in the store also said they were having the same symptoms, so clearly something is…

Why are we shamed for using PTO we’re given ???

Why bother giving it to the employees if you’re going to issue a warning when I use it? Is it not mine to use? You give me 80 hours of PTO, I use 40 in 6 months and now I’m getting scolded because “it’s too much”? SO WHY WAS IT APPROVED? I literally have 40 hours left. If this is a “gotcha” situation why bother? Do you like yelling at employees or something???? You’re not going to make me feel bad for using time THATS MINE TO USE! If you don’t want employees to use it, don’t give it !!

Just had an interview go 5 rounds before I got an offer.

Each interview was tougher. It was like a video game with the boss fights getting more challenging each time. Eventually I had to take on the big boss CEO, who was a total tryhard. Been looking since October. Finally got an offer today. Wtf even is this.
