So I’m reading and listening to David Graeber’s theory of bullshit jobs and it got me thinking of a paradox in our world regarding bullshit jobs. Why is it that the jobs that are essential to our society and is integral for things functioning paid like shit? (retail, warehouse, construction, etc). And the non-essential jobs (bullshit jobs) get paid generally far more handsomely than the essential jobs (middle management, regulation inspectors, government red tape and buerocrats, much of c-suite, etc) Would love to hear some feedback or if maybe I’m mistaken.

10pm on a thursday night they decide without telling any of our managers that they're going to regrout the fucking floors while were open on overnight. i've had to leave work twice before because i had an asthma attack both times when our ventilation wasnt working and the fumes from the grills fryers and grill cleaner got to me. they didn't close the store when that happened. there was a mountain of dishes when i got to work and got told we couldn't wash them for several hours until after they finished and it was dry with only 3 people scheduled . once the new grout hit the floor i had to go cause it triggered my asthma instantly and i threw up to boot. the stupid ass district manager needs to realize we have to close for this shit it's fucking ridiculous. trying to make food mid rush and…
I currently work in admin at a social services agency and I’m hybrid. Whenever I ask for an extra day at home, or inquire about working from home more frequently when I’m trying to meet an important deadline and really need to focus (our office is open floor plan and I cannot focus for the life of me with 6 other people yelling at their computers on meetings), I’m told it’s an “equity issue”. This is because there are people at the company whose jobs require them to be in-office full time because they work with clients. It puts me in a weird spot because if I push back or question their logic (or even if I HAVE to work from home an extra day for a medical reason or something), the de facto is that I’m against equity. Personally, I believe even the direct service workers should get to…
I was over in r/digitalnomads earlier and found myself being harassed by a few folks (they deleted their comments) who couldn’t believe that I simply “hate working”. They think I haven’t found “meaningful work”, and would be bored without work. They assumed I hate my job and life, that I must not exercise (weird assumption). One tech douche even posted about how “men” need meaningful jobs and it goes back to cave men (he wasn’t sure about women). I love my life and like my job. I’m good at my job and it affords me a fun, flexible lifestyle. It stops there though. Working is a means to an end for me. If I was able to never work again, the answer is automatic. 99.9% of people on this planet don’t have the privilege to even consider “meaningful work”. They’re out here trying to survive. I can’t even imagine what…
Why isn’t climate change considered a working class issue? Climate Change will overwhelmingly effect the poor with extreme weather effecting outdoor workers like agriculture workers and construction workers. Why is environmentalism considered a issue for upper class white liberals and not the humans right essential it is?
Sometimes I'm much, much meaner but I was feeling less mad and more silly this particular day.
Salary means you own me?
My bosses like to think because I’m on salary I’m owned and they make me work 60+ hour work weeks so their labor is low and they don’t have to pay the hourly workers much money. I’m sick of it. I’m tired of “being on call” with my personal phone. Boss called me today after therapy and yelled at me and accused me of trying to pull something on him because I wasn’t working this morning, I was closing tonight instead and I didn’t tell him that, even though there is literally no reason I had to. I hate them. I hate my job. I hate working for someone who makes more than me and yells at me from the comfort of their home because they don’t have to come in and work like me. oh and they never work weekends, take all the unpaid time off they want and…
So today I was going to stay after and help out and do some overtime. Recently my Foreman has been harassing me for the past couple of days and I've reported her. Just today, she came up to me accusing me of hazing and spreading rumors about her which is not true. I've only mentioned issues with her to management. She said that if she finds anything else out she will cut me and make my life miserable. I'm off for the next two nights but I just don't feel comfortable at all come into work afterwards. She found out that I was trying to transfer and said. “I know people higher up, I have people close to me, I know people at that place and I will make your life miserable if you fucking try me. If I go to jail I will hurt you. I know you go…
I don’t like this person one bit, she’s a project manager in her 40s and she has made some ignorant racist comments in the past, but that’s not what this post will be about. So I made a little mistake regarding the delivery date for one of our orders and instead of telling me to be careful next time, she speaks to me in an annoyed tone and says “I don’t trust you anymore”, grabs the pile of orders to double check them herself and just leaves the scene
Meanwhile the workers at both can’t even afford to live
