It rhymes with Eee Bork, booked a day pass and the images online showed desks with comfy task chairs. Nope large kitchen tables with hard wood stackable chairs. So I bit the bullet and splurged on a room. No extra monitors, no key to lock it (you have to leave your stuff and find staff to lock it), maybe the coffee was free, but that was really it. I saw tons of private offices on lease filled with high end jumbo monitors, tech, etc. I can see having one off long term offices in such a place, but the price for a private room with checks notes a computer chair and 4' desk, doesn't seem worth the cost. Not even a view to get momentarily distracted. So how are companies able to afford such high rent there? Most the rooms had stuff, but were basically empty most the day except…
Month: August 2024
The Work Number report (used by recruiters and HR) is quite comprehensive, and includes information on a job seeker’s employment dates, salary history, paystub information, health care provider, whether someone has dental insurance, and if they’ve ever filed an unemployment claim. It also now shows business income, which I suspect is being sold by QuickBooks. Previously, procuring this data was illegal, but Equifax found a work-around, and sells it as an HR product. How does Equifax obtain this sensitive information? With the willing aid of thousands of U.S. businesses, including much of the Fortune 500. Government agencies (as much as 80-85% of the federal civilian workforce) use the service, including schools and healthcare workers. In order to access the data, these organizations also allow a quid pro quo – they allow Equifax to tap directly into their HR systems so the credit bureau can sell the information to others. In…
Corporate Karma?
Google has just told publishers that their websites are being replaced; oh, and they have to train their replacement… https://www.engadget.com/ai/online-publishers-face-a-dilemma-allow-ai-scraping-from-google-or-lose-search-visibility-202246891.html
I can’t believe it
They fired me with 2 days left on my probation
I work at a small company no larger than 10 people. This woman has the title of “Director” but isn’t even my direct boss. She suggested we have one on one meetings to go over what I’ve been working on week to week. At first it seemed friendly but I now realize it’s just so she can gauge my timesheet to point out where she feels I am wasting company time. These meetings have zero point and zero resolution to them and I’m realizing this is just her way of digging out information she can report to our actual boss to justify her role in the company. How can I get through these meetings without really giving her anything? Edit: I should add our company isn’t exactly doing great at the moment. We’ve failed to acquire new leads and this woman was brought in for that sole purpose, only for…
Goddammit I wish I could make them walk in our shoes. You bought your house when it was $200k. Now that same home would cost around $450k with a mortgage around $2500 a month. The 3yr employees here make $22hr and you cannot find a home under $400k. So by my high school math, you'd have to work here for 15yrs before you make enough to afford a mortgage. I work a state job BTW. A job that's supposed to be rewarding and has great benefits. But in reality, alot of workers here qualify for food stamps cause of the pay and come to work sick cause 1sick day a month is not enough when you have children. They will fire your ass for taking off without pay so if you get really sick and have no paid time off to take, you are screwed.
I submitted my 2 weeks notice.
I just submit my 2 weeks notice. I am not working in US. So I have to put in my 2 weeks. I am working in a job with me as the only staff in the company. My boss put me an informal PIP. He asked if I have the drive and yet not seeing him 75% of the time since week 2. He told me that I needed to treat this like it is my own business. He told me that I have no drive and asked specifically how, he is being very vague. Now I felt like a relief off my chest Conversations goes like this Coversation 1: Boss: I want you to know I am disappointed in you. It is your attitude towards not respecting your work. Let's look through the process *Clears most of the kpi* Me: Looks like I have clear most of my work.…
I can’t even put into words how LIVID I am. And I know I’m not alone. We ended busy season maybe two weeks ago and now they’re saying that we will be close Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks and will get 2 paid days for each week so if we want full checks we need to use 48 hours of our own PTO to cover it. I don’t even have any vacation left because I took one small trip this year and also had a cancer scare and had to have days off for testing and then surgery and I got infected after and had to take the rest of my PTO basically…. They already underpay for the industry but there’s not a ton of jobs up here. Three people quit this year and they didn’t backfill ANY of the jobs. They can afford to keep the store open. and the…
Preaching to the choir here…
I’m frustrated, and I know I am just a drop in the bucket of millions of people being frustrated that the goal posts keep moving. I’m in my early 20s, I did everything right. I got a degree, worked 3 jobs while doing it so I’m very lucky to currently have no debt. I graduated Cum Laude, but because I’ve had to work the last 4.5 years I couldn’t network. So I have a long work history, loyal at that, been at one of my jobs for nearly 5 years, but because I’m a nobody who doesn’t have miraculous connections, I’m stuck. I have a spread sheet going on 46 jobs, I’ve applied to, and those are only the ones I’ve started tracking in the last 2-3 weeks after 3 previous months of applying. Like yes I would love a remote job doing something in my field, one because it…
The vibe around layoffs
My company is currently going through reorganization… so layoffs. I’ve survived thankfully since I get paid peanuts, but the vibes around layoff announcements is so strange. Obviously I’m glad that my company is choosing to be more sensitive than dismissive over these announcements but it also feels like they’re announcing who’s going to the firing squad today. Like, it’s super grave. I was asked if I’m okay that my boss will be transitioned out in the next 30 days. Bro, I can’t actually answer that? Also why are you talking to me like I’m in shock after an accident or something? It’s very strange. Edit: just wanted to let everyone know I’m actively searching for a new job just in case anyways. This shit sounds like a sinking ship and I want to be prepared if it comes for me
