backpacker exploitation

Has this happened to anyone? I am an Aussie and used to live in Perth, Western Australia. A shop selling bulk whole foods and European niche products always had a handwritten cardboard sign in the window “Casual Staff Wanted”. I went in to inquire couple of times, never got a call back, figured they wanted younger staff because I was in my 30s and teenagers are cheaper. However, the Staff Wanted sign was *always in the front window…. They couldn't find anyone?? I later met an Irish backpacker, who'd applied and got the job, along with his fellow Irish backpacker.

They were told it was only one staff vacancy, they could both do a day's unwaged training as a tryout and whoever showed most aptitude would get the job… Which was going to be cash in hand.
So, these two set to, they were mates so it was a friendly, but fierce competition to get a cushy indoor shop assistant job in the city.
At the end of the day spent busting both their arses to get the job, they were told neither were suitable.
Turns out, after comparing notes with other backpackers in hostels etc, this shop did this as a regular scam, mostly to foreign students whose English wasn't great.
Free day's labour from backpackers who feel they can't report the owner.
