I hate being asked to screw other people over

I work for a big corporation, one of the biggest and richest in the world. In 2021, we expanded operations in my area to a couple of new markets and onboarded half a dozen people as contractors with promises to convert them to full-time employees sometime down the line. I thought it was going to be like 6 months down the line, and so did the people I hired; then it got pushed back to a year, then “end of q1 2023,” and now I just found out that it's not even going to be discussed until 2024. I feel like I've been asked to lie to people. I'm full time and have a good salary and benefits, and I told them, when I hired them, that they could expect the same at some point. Now I'm stringing them along like a bad boyfriend, and while I know they're not mad at me personally, in some ways that almost makes it worse – I'm the friendly face who convinces them to stay while our corporate overlords work to fuck them over. I hate it so much.
Edit: I told my team about the “updated timeline” the moment I found out, and I told my manager that his boss needs to meet with them to discuss this – I'm literally a mouthpiece here, and I think management needs to understand the impact it has on people not to have health insurance or paid days off. That said, I can't just quit my job with nothing lined up, so maybe don't suggest that.
