Work wants me to pay back the drawer, is this legal?

Hi all! First post here, please delete if not allowed, I’ll try to keep this short. I work for a franchisee, and in the job we handle a cash drawer. I was told today by another employee that if the drawer is over at the end of the night, we put it to the side in “extra”, but if the drawer is short everyone who worked that day(or shift I am 100%unsure as of right now) has to chip in their own money to make sure the drawer is even. This makes me feel defensive and not wanting to lose income if someone made a mistake through the day. Does anyone have insight or know if this is illegal? TIA!
