Night shift is taxing on your cardiovascular health. The studies vary on the numbers but they all agree unnaturally altering your circadian rhythm damages your body, particularly your heart. You're an increased risk of metabolic diseases too, like diabetes. There are even studies that show it increases miscarriages.
The impact of night shift is the health equivalent of having an unhealthy habit like smoking or excessive drinking.
But there's always going to be a need for night shifters. Everything from the hospital to road construction.
I would suggest that night shift work be limited to two 12-hour shifts a week. The pay would be the same as people who work 40 hours a week day shift.
The place where I work now pays a measly $2.50 an hour extra overnight. That's not going to go very far when the medical bills start rolling in.
