I have a curious question..

I've been working for this company for 2.5 years now. My official title is “research associate”, it used to be “data collector”. To best describe what I do, is I go to various stores for a client (usually that stores competitor, but not always) and collect prices of specific items. Each “job” is a little different and takes different times and what have you. We get paid piece rate. Sometimes we get a flat rate of $10-12/job, sometimes it's 1¢ per scan. It varies. We get “paid” for gas and driving; $12/hr after the first 30 min in a trip and (at last check) 63¢/mi after the first 30 mi in a trip. But there are some jobs that they eliminated the hourly driving pay for in the last year. They also eliminated a lot of work on us in general last year, which caused my pays to drop dramatically…

We get “paid” for gas and driving; $12/hr after the first 30 min in a trip and (at last check) 63¢/mi after the first 30 mi in a trip. But there are some jobs that they eliminated the hourly driving pay for in the last year. They also eliminated a lot of work on us in general last year, which caused my pays to drop dramatically and I had to take on a second job. Now as for my question; there's no like list to choose work from, no real way to get extra work with this job, but once in a while some extra or new work will pop up or I'll get asked to “help” on a job. One thing they NEVER do is tell how much a job pays. My DM (the only person I ever communicate with) doesn't even know most of the time. I want to know if this is legal business practice for them to not openly communicate how much someone's going to be paid for their work. I never know until I get my paycheck and even then, they make it almost impossible for you to decipher how much you're truly making. I've even sat down and tried to do the math a dozen different ways to see exactly what or how they calculate ones hourly average and nothing ever added up to what it said my avg was on my paycheck. At this point, this job is not my main source of income, but I keep it for extra/easy cash. But I've questioned their ethics since day 1. I think I'm the only person who even really has a vague understanding of my paycheck. I could go into more detail about horrible this place is, but like I said I'm just curious the legality of them never disclosing the “pay” for a job. (Idk if it matters but I'm in PA, but my company is based out of VA. They have employees all over the country. There's no office we report to. My DM lives in OH and I've never met him. I've only met like 3 of my coworkers, 1 of which is my friend who recommended the job.)
