I've been working up the IT ladder for nearly 20 years. I honestly had a good gig at my last job, full remote, build and manage a service desk. Long story short, company didn't want to drop dime on software (lol) so my role changed, my boss who knew nothing about IT was crippling my abilities and I was fired.
New job, IT asset management for a multi billion dollar global company…. the IT team works in the inventory closet… wtf. Also it's the most toxic work environment I've ever set foot in. Exactly 7 days in, HR suggested I go on unpaid leave until the harassment investigations are over. I was sexually harassed WHILE WATCHING THE SEXUAL HARASSMENT TRAINING!!!! My boss doesn't care, told me I can quit if I don't like it, which I told the team I planned on.
So a few HR folk are working on this investigation into the team and my boss, apparently they get small complaints often, but nothing like what I submitted. No matter what happens, I'm done.
Rant over, now the good part.
My wife and I crunched the numbers. I'm starting my own business. My side hustle (sell shit on ebay, make and sell shit on etsy) makes OK cash, sometimes as much as my old full time job. So I'm investing all of my time into 3D printing for etsy and local sales.
Will it fail? Maybe.
Will times be tough? Maybe.
Will I be happier than I have been in the past… +15 years? Yes. I had a month between jobs where I did this plan and I loved it.
Fuck the toxic work environments.
Fuck tying our health and wellbeing to a job.
Fuck the machine. Burn it down.
