Losing my job, switching us to 1099 (self employed)

So I recently got my dream job. A work from home construction management job after working 10 years climbing cell towers for a living. I moved to a new area and bought my first house as well since I got a nice juicy raise. This move was directly for my job so that I could be closer to the market that I manage. After only one year of working here, a capital investment firm took control of the company and they are letting almost everyone go and switching to contractors for everything. We already sometimes have 2-5 layers of subcontractors for almost everything and it makes getting anything done a huge pain.

One of our contractors also recently fell to their death unfortunately (not my market).

But they’re saying they want to keep me on as a 1099 contractor and pay me via “milestones”. Which is when I reach certain points in construction they’ll give me a pay out. But they haven’t told me what the milestones are, and how much they pay for them. I’m currently 2 weeks from getting laid off and I have no idea what I’m going to do. I’m in a bad area for my industry as I’m not near a major city or any employers now that I moved.

It’s crazy to me that the federal reserve intentionally raised rates to make the unemployment rate higher. Then these capital investment firms can just come and lay people off so they can make even more money. I feel like we are truly headed for this dystopian future where no one is an employee and we have this gigantic managerial class of subcontractors, with the worker at the bottom getting nearly nothing.

I’m not even sure if I’ll get unemployment since they’re switching us to 1099 now. I have enough money for about 3 months then I’m back to square one.
