It all began in the first week of May when I received a call from this job regarding a job offer. They mentioned a specific amount but failed to send me an offer letter when I requested one. Their excuse was that it was an hourly position. Last week, I decided to clarify the benefits package and request the offer letter again. Surprisingly, they presented an entirely different package from what they had mentioned two weeks prior. Frustrated with their game-playing, I decided to call in sick today and personally witness the situation.
The first red flag arose this morning when I asked for my manager and was informed that she had quit, leaving me to wait for HR to arrive. The second red flag was the realization that I was the fifth person to hold this position within a span of six months. Similarly, the manager position had seen three changes in just five months. There was one kind lady who sensed my discomfort and acknowledged that I had gotten myself into a messy situation, possibly declining other job offers to accept this one.
Fortunately, I informed her about calling in sick and my plan to leave by lunch. She completely understood, as she herself had been aggressively applying for other jobs after only four months in this position. She also informed me about the benefits package, explaining that they are only offered after one year, not within ninety days as previously mentioned. For me, it was essentially three strikes and you're out. I knew what I was getting myself into and wanted to gain some experience from it. After clocking out for lunch, I texted the hiring manager (who works from home) to let him know that I would not be returning and to thank him for the opportunity. I blocked his number and am now looking forward to tomorrow morning.
