I work for a charity and today I got chatting to a member of the board of trustees. I have worked for the charity for about four years but never really met this man before. As part of our informal chat I mentioned that I worked with his daughter who did some work experience with the charity when I first started. I mentioned this in an attempt to establish some sort of connection with him. The trustee smirked, pursed his lips, raised his eyebrows and said “so you remember her, she made an impression on you.” I took this as the trustee implying that there was another reason for me remembering his daughter beyond just the fact that we worked together. I believed this to suggest a romantic interest in her. I am 37 and married. His daughter was a teenager when she volunteered with the charity. I felt very uncomfortable afterwards.
My question is, am I being overly sensitive? At the time I felt uncomfortable but as I write this out now it seems that I might be being a bit of a twat in getting offended. Any insight would be massively appreciated.
