Is this wage theft? Being forced to clock in AFTER changing into work clothes

This happened a few years ago and at that time I thought it's normal. I was working at a grocery store where we weren't allowed to clock in before wearing a uniform. So if you were scheduled to start at 8AM, you had to be there at 7:50 to change into work clothes and clock in at 8. I got into trouble for accidentally clocking in before being dressed (because that's how it works everywhere?) Anyways I was reading some posts here and I realized it might not have been so legal
