“We are choosing to go with a different candidate”

I applied to what looked like my dream, part-time position in February. This was with a crown corporation (government owned but operates like a private business with corporate partners) so it was able to offer me amazing pay and great health benefits. It's hours also were great, which I was so excited for because throughout my job search, I had difficult finding jobs that were actually part-time. I am in my Masters and need a little extra space to do school stuff. I didn't hear back from them until around mid March. This isn't unheard of and I was still looking for jobs so I was happy to get a response. Over the next 2 months, I went through THREE interviews. One of them was in person and 1.5 hours long.

They all went really, really well. The in-person interview went so well that the man who would be my supervisor said that I basically would be getting the job as I am the best fit of all the candidates he's seen. I was ecstatic. I had my last interview with his boss, which also went well, towards the end of APRIL.

Then, radio silence. I email and let their HR person know I was a candidate and was hoping to hear from them soon in regards to a decision. They had gotten a new HR person as they only hire contract HR workers with a limited employment period. Fine, that probably would be difficult to transition into this new role. Let's give them some leeway. She said, “I am reviewing the current candidates and will be in touch with my hiring manager shortly.”

Two weeks. Nothing. Email again asking if there are any timelines in place for hiring so I can know if I should start looking for another job or not. “No decision has been reached, thank you for your patience.”

ANOTHER TWO WEEKS. At this point, my savings are dwindling and I'm starting to get really stressed. I needed a job by the beginning of May, it is now the beginning of June. I email again asking if there has been a decision I didn't notice in my junk box or any concrete deadlines for hiring. They didn't respond to me for a week. AND THEN THEY LET ME KNOW THEY HAD STARTED INTERVIEWING MORE CANDIDATES. BUT THEY WOULD LET ME KNOW.

With that email, I had a great cry and let myself get angry and hurt that this job, which I had been told I would be getting and was perfect for me and my field, seemed to no longer be in my future. I went back on Indeed and started hitting up the grind.

I found a new job in less than two weeks. I'm pretty excited about it, but there are no benefits, and the pay is much less. My savings were so low that at this point I couldn't be as 'picky' as I had been when I first started this process in February. Yesterday, JULY 10TH, a full 5 months after I put in my application, I got an email saying I didn't get the position I knew that I wasn't going to get it, but it still hurt. I guess I'm just happy I do have somewhere to land.

Anyways, thank you for reading and letting me vent. Fuck this process, fuck these companies, and fuck capitalism. This one hurt.
