my area manager called me “unnecessary” today, on top of loads of other stuff.

i started a new job about two weeks ago. it's an alternative fashion and body piercing place. so far, it seems pretty good. everyone's nice and i can get cheap clothes and piercings (hell yeah! but it's a shame they don't also tattoo) on my staff discount. i was doing some visual merchandising, under orders from the supervisor (who is, to be fair, really cool). she asked me to stuff a load of backpacks and hang them up on the very top shelves for display. i was like cool, no worries, i'll sort that out. i went and figured out what stock was already on the shop floor, compared it with what was in the warehouse, and brought out a selection of new items that weren't on display. now, the area manager was here today, overseeing the operations as it's a new store. she asked me what i was doing…

so far, it seems pretty good. everyone's nice and i can get cheap clothes and piercings (hell yeah! but it's a shame they don't also tattoo) on my staff discount.

i was doing some visual merchandising, under orders from the supervisor (who is, to be fair, really cool). she asked me to stuff a load of backpacks and hang them up on the very top shelves for display.

i was like cool, no worries, i'll sort that out. i went and figured out what stock was already on the shop floor, compared it with what was in the warehouse, and brought out a selection of new items that weren't on display.

now, the area manager was here today, overseeing the operations as it's a new store. she asked me what i was doing and i explained. she told me that i shouldn't bother comparing what discrepancies exist between displayed items and items in the warehouse, as they are all to be sold regardless.

i suggested that it would be sensible to have at least one of each item, as it meant the customers had greater variety and would be more likely to find something they liked from 24 different items, as opposed to 24 items that were all very similar or identical.

she told me “i understand, but you're so unnecessary”. i don't really know what she meant by this comment. she had earlier threatened to sack me for an incident that occurred a week prior that was completely out of my control and only related to me because i knew the person that came in from outside of work. my manager and supervisor didn't even back me up, even though they knew the situation – they just didn't wanna get in her way!

not very happy about this because until now, it seemed like a pretty cool place to work.
