I work for a contractor, to remain generally inconspicuous, the company is called “Brallied Booniversal”. The specific site I work at is a government area, federal laws apply here. We are also in a union.
All of us were told (not promised)last year 2022, that we might get a raise since we had to change the contract. I’m not sure what exactly was changed, but for about 4 months we were all under the impression we’d get it. Nothing was on paper, at least not for us. November comes up, the day the contract is expected to change, and we’re told we didn’t get the raise. We’re all upset with the news, but we carry on. In March this year, we as a union put in formal written requests to change the contract for a numerous amount of things; wages and better insurance etc. This time we were told and promised on paper that we’d get it. Today, we were told that nothing on the contract will change. I’ve been here only about a year, but the wage is not the greatest, $19 an hour. There are a bunch of people who said they’d walk, myself included. I’m going back to school in less than a month to finish my associates degree, I honestly wouldn’t mind walking, but I want to at least do it professionally for my resume and references updated. I have savings and I occasionally donate plasma…
Tl;dr Promised twice we’d get better wages and benefits, both times it was a lot of smoke being blown around.
What can the union do? What can I do? Is there any more information or tips you can offer? Thank you
