Is it wrong of me to try and get job offers before I’m available to hire?

As the title says, I'm not actually available to start working until January. I have been reached out to by over 20 recruiters for roles in my specific field. Because I want to make sure I pick the right job, I have been lying to a few of them about when my availability to start work is to get offer letters to gauge my value in the industry. Is this common practice when looking for a new job? I've been in the military for the last 10 years so this will be my first actual job outside of it and want to make sure I find the right role, location, and pay for what I'll be doing. Any advice is appreciated
