So I recently got offered a job at an animal hospital as a veterinary assistant. For context, a few months ago I applied to be a receptionist there. I did my interview and all went well, however, they picked the individual who had more receptionist experience (which was fine.). I ended up getting another job, and then they had called me a few months later to offer me the position of a vet assistant, where they would train me fully and also pay a percentage of my college course. I was THRILLED to say the least. I ended up leaving my other job and pursuing this one as it was best for me and my future.
Fast forward to yesterday, it was my first day on the job. They knew I hadn’t went to school for this, I was previously working in social work and have little to no medical background. I watched a few dogs get surgeries, helped with handing surgical instruments to the vet and the vet techs, and got shown around the hospital. My coworkers seemed very frustrated with me that I didn’t know much of anything, which confused me. At one point they actually got me to put the surgical instruments in order of how they go on the hook to be packed away, and I kept explaining I had no idea what any of the instruments were called. They kept telling me to do it and that “I would get the hang of it”. The issue is I didn’t even know where to start. Everyone was just staring at me and I felt so judged. After my lunch break, none of my trainers showed me anything, they kept walking away from me and I felt like I was in the way. I tried to push through though. I was tasked to wash the instruments, and depending on which one it was, it went in a different sterilization bucket, and I put one in the wrong one after only being shown once and the girl got pissed off with me. The whole day was between getting me to do something I didn’t know how to do, or just being ignored. What happened to actually training people? They took me on knowing I didn’t have a background in this and I was so excited to learn. Long story short, I quit.
