Paid as 1099, expected to do tracking like employees…we refused today

I work for a small to mid-sized bookkeeping firm that is 100% remote. All of the bookkeepers and Controllers are contract/1099. We make a base hourly rate and then receive a monthly bonus based upon several factors including efficiency (we are required to track our time spent per client), reporting accuracy, deadlines and other things. A lot of which technically puts us in the realm of being an employee. Well the owner is getting too big for her britches we believe and rolled out even more requirements. I personally generate $160k gross for the company every year but only get paid $45-$50k. With our hourly and bonuses it still averages out to less than the $34.60 national hourly average in that we are all making $24-$29.00 per hour with no PTO or benefits. We all refused to sign the new contract today. The owner is about to have a very bad day as we all compiled emails with our list of issues as well being sent to her tonight. We could actually report her to the IRS and since we are scattered to each of our Labor Depts in our home states.

There are too many clients to handle if even half of us walk, the company is too big to get enough immediate coverage to replace us and she is too small to have the leverage she thinks she has. I think we got her where we want her. Wish us luck.
