Reprimanded for discussing pay

My friend is an independent contractor working towards a salaried position in the South. They were recently reprimanded for discussing pay with a coworker. No firing or anything, just told that doing so is against company policy. I've looked into the NLRA to help them, but i'm uncertain if a contractor is covered under the protections. Could anyone help clear this up? Thanks.
