No one wants to work – actually, the job just sucks

My coworker is in their 70s and I'm in my late 20s. The disparity between us concerning work couldn't be greater. We are short a person at work and my coworker deems it's because no one wants to work. This is a moderately hard labor job, in the sun, minimal breaks, and minimal shade. The bosses are incredibly condescending, so much so that my coworker has admitted to crying because of them. My coworker hasn't gotten a raise from minimum wage in the 6 years they've worked there. How could this possibly be because no one wants to work?
