I work M-F, day shift at a food manufacturing facility. A few years ago my manager split my shift into three groups. Rather than have the entire crew come in every Saturday these smaller groups would rotate Saturdays. I’m only required to work every third Saturday.
I don’t need to work overtime. I’ve been fortunate that between me and my wife we make enough to support our family. So I try to get out of as many Saturday shifts as possible. By scheduling vacation over my scheduled Saturdays or asking a coworker if they’d like to volunteer.
I’ve worked maybe 5 Saturdays in the last year. I love it, I get to spend time at home with my wife and little boy.
Today I asked a fellow employee to cover my upcoming Saturday shift. He says “No Problem.” Great. Boss comes to me later and says he doesn’t think it’s fair everyone else in my group has to work while I take it off.
I’m like “they have the same opportunity to ask someone to cover their shift and or ask for it off using vacation.”
Why is that my problem? He says I have to work some Saturdays. And I’m like “Why?” If someone of the same skill set is covering my shift voluntarily what’s the difference?
Am I crazy? Anyway I’m currently looking for a new job. Been here 9 years. Really don’t want to leave. But all this little shit is starting to add up.
