I am currently working as a financial regulator. It is relatively common for the regulated companies to poach people in my line of work for the compliance roles as there is a strong demand for this role in the jurisdiction I am based in. Often it leads to quite a bump in compensation too. However, it's worth mentioning that there is a 3 month covenant for employees to not work for the regulated entities after quitting.
I got the associate position here straight after finishing masters programme at university and been working here for about half a year now. I realise that I still have to gain a lot of experience before considering a move but I just wanted to hear advice from someone more experienced than me about how to build my career going forward – if I want to eventually leave for one of the regulated companies, how do I prepare for that and what do I do to accomplish that once I am ready? How do I approach those regulated companies and negotiate moving to them without risking losing my current job?
Alternatively, could you please recommend any other career progression that you would consider in my position (except for internal promotions within the organisation)?
