So I used to work as a pizza delivery driver for a big pizza chain in the UK, I was on about 10.80 an hour and we would get paid 1.20 per delivery. We got a memo saying that our delivery payment which covers fuel and wear and tear on our vehicles would be reduced to £1. None of the other drivers were happy about this but they kept that between other drivers and didn't mention it to managers.
But I could barely make that work at £1.20 let alone at £1 as it wouldn't cover my fuel costs.
I spoke to the store manager who told me to take it up with the area manager if I didn't like how much I was getting paid, so I did.
(Area manager =AM)
Me: this £1 I get paid for delivery isn't covering my fuel costs, not including the wear and tear.
AM: well what would you class as wear and tear?
Me: well tyres, brake pads, oil and filters,
AM: we don't class that as wear and tear.
Me: what do you mean? That's the definition of wear and tear on a vehicle.
AM: well I had to put tyres on my car and (company) didn't pay for that.
Me: but I'm a driver, my car gets used to make the company money and I have to use money out of my paycheck to buy fuel that the company doesn't pay back to me, can't you see how that isn't fair?
The area manager then shrugs his shoulders and turns away, this made me snap, so in a shop full of customers, I raised my voice and shouted at him “just because you earn 4 times my wage doesn't give you the right to ignore the problems that YOU have the power to fix, you only get paid that much because we are the ones that actually do the work?”
He then sent me home after that, right before rush hour. I quit about a month later after the store manager dropped my hours to 10 a week.
IF YOU LOSE MONEY DOING A JOB JUST SO THEY CAN MAKE MORE MONEY, JUST QUIT!
Sorry for the rant 🙂
